This chapter provides a review of major traditions within tourism geographies. This implies a description of the development of tourism research and not least the scientification of tourism geographies, i.e. the transition from being an applied and poorly theoretically underpinned field of research into a competitive field struggling for a position within the academic landscape. Since there are several reasonable accounts available already this chapter will also use a bibliometric approach to supplement existing overviews. Bibliometric tools allow for that a systematic approach to what has been published by whom. Moreover, the available tools allow for identifying thematic clusters as well as networks of individuals. By providing this overview a framework for the following chapters is provided.
