Note

The annual workshop of the Swedish Artificial Intelligence Society (SAIS) provides an ideal forum to foster contacts among AI research groups in Sweden and neighboring countries. SAIS also seeks to establish links with related research disciplines and industry. The 23rd annual workshop of the Swedish Artificial Intelligence Society (SAIS 06) was held in Umeå, from May 10-12, 2006. This meeting follows that in Västerås (2005) in which the Swedish Society for Learning Systems (SSLS) was officially merged into SAIS. Other recent meetings of SAIS were in Lund (2004), Örebro (2003), Ronneby (2002), Skövde (2001) and Linköping (2000). These proceedings contain the abstracts of invited presentations and tutorials as well as the 16 papers accepted to SAIS 2006 (amongst 23 papers submitted). In addition these proceedings contain a handful of communication posters that were included to open the conference to groups that did not have time to prepare a paper, but were interested in communicating their efforts. A special theme in this year's meeting is the use of artificial intelligence in medicine. Clearly AI in medicine is well motivated from both a moral and technical point of view; society demands advanced care and greater efficiencies out of the medical system, while AI offers a bevy of promising and proven techniques. Naturally, much of the work presented at SAIS 2006 addresses other important areas of basic and applied AI\@. Specifically, you will find solid pieces of work engaging problems in neural networks, machine learning, automated reasoning, data mining, planning, robotics, knowledge-based systems, probabilistic reasoning and more. The chairs would like to thank all those who contributed to the success of SAIS 2006. Particular thanks goes to the program committee as well as the external reviewers. We also appreciate the advice and expertise of our local colleagues, the SAIS board and previous SAIS workshop organizers.
