Daily, people need to form judgments about quantities such as the weight, price, or toxicity of an object. The scientific exploration of this is referred to as multiple cue judgments and concerns the integration of information about separate features of an object to form a single judgment. Two main processes have been identified and are robustly differentiated as based in either memory (exemplar-based judgments) or active reasoning (rule-based judgments). Recently, it has been suggested that an exemplar-based judgment process may constitute a default process in multiple cue judgments. Characteristics that are often associated with default processes are that they are fast and automatic. It has so far not been shown whether exemplar-based processes are fast in the field of multiple cue judgments. To investigate this, an exemplar-based judgment process was induced in participants which were subsequently tested in the conditions with and without time pressure. Results showed that participants were able to use an exemplar-based judgment process under time pressure, as shown by model fit for the exemplar based model (EBM) and by behavioral markers for memory based judgments. This indicates that an exemplar-based judgment process has the capacity to be fast. Future studies should aim to investigate whether it also is automatic and a default process.

Dagligen behöver människor göra bedömningar om kvantiteter såsom vikt, pris, eller giftighet av ett objekt. Det vetenskapliga studiet av detta kallas multiple cue judgments och syftar på bedömningar av objekt, genom integrering av information om dess separata egenskaper. Två huvudsakliga processer har identifierats och robusta skillnader har kunnat påvisas mellan bedömningar baserade på minne (exemplarbaserade bedömningar) eller aktiva resonemang (regelbaserade bedömningar). Det har nyligen föreslagits att exemplarbaserade processer skulle kunna utgöra en grundläggande standardprocess (”default process”) inom mul-tiple cue judgments. Egenskaper som oftast är associerade med grundläggande standardprocesser är att de är snabba och automatiska. I fältet multiple cue judgments har det ännu inte visats om exemplarbaserade bedömningar är snabba. I syfte att undersöka detta inducerades en exemplarbaserad bedömningsprocess hos deltagare, som sedan testades i betingelserna med och utan tidspress. Resultaten visade att deltagare kunde använda en exemplarbaserad bedömningsprocess, vilket kunde visas med modellanpassning för den exemplarbaserade modellen (EBM) och genom beteendemarkörer för minnesbaserade bedömningar. Detta visar på att en exemplarbaserad bedömningsprocess har kapaciteten att vara snabb. Framtida studier bör undersöka huruvida den också är automatisk och en grundläggande standardprocess (”default process”).
