The impact of urinary incontinence on women´s quality of life (English)
Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

Background: Urinary incontinence (UI) is one of the most common health problems in the world. UI is most common amongst women up to the age of 75, after the age of 75, UI is equally common in both sexes. UI is defined as involuntary leakage of urine which is divided into different types. Every treatment of UI must be done individually depending on the underlying cause. There are two different types of treatments, non-pharmacological treatment and pharmacological treatment. UI can limit the daily life activity for women, which can lower the quality of life amongst those who are affected.

Aim: To map factors that have an impact on the quality of life amongst women affected with UI.

Methods: A quantitative literature study consisting of nine quantitative articles was reviewed, analyzed and summarized.

Results: UI-frequency, urinary volume, duration of the urine leakage, UI-types, sexual function, sleep, menopause and sociodemographic factors led to a reduction in quality of life in women affected with UI in comparison to healthy women. Quality of life was reduced with increased symptoms.

Conclusion: The results of this litterature study concludes that UI can reduce the quality of life amongst women. Furthermore, in order to maintain and improve the quality of life, it is important to organize the health care systems and develop interventions for treating UI. Future research should investigate if UI can be prevented with the help of a certain lifestyle.
