Describing Healthcare Professionals’ ExperienceCaring for People Living with Hiv : A literature study (English)
Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

Introduction: Hiv is a viral infection primarily transmitted through unprotected sexual contact and exchange of blood products. In the 1980s, during the absence of treatment, a pandemic emerged among homosexuals. Leading to stigmatization of hiv. According to people living with hiv, the stigma is still present in healthcare settings today.

Aim: To describe healthcare professionals' experience caring for people with hiv.

Method: A literature study based on eight qualitative articles collected from Cinahl and PubMed. The articles were quality checked using Olsson & Sörensen´s review template. The result was analyzed using Friberg´s five-step model.

Result: Healthcare providers perceived hiv as something self-inflicted due to a certain behavior. Furthermore, uncertainty and fear towards hiv was described, which could be related to lack of knowledge and hesitancy to existing knowledge. Occasionally a feeling of compassion for people with hiv was present. The lack of resources lead to a feeling of exhaustion.

Conclusion: The result indicated that fear often could be connected to lack of knowledge and for that reason there is a need for further educational opportunities. There should also be a requirement for management to be responsible for adequate support and resources.
