Abstract [sv]
Abstract [en]
The aim of this study was to investigate how depression and anxiety symptoms predict development of somatic symptoms and how somatic symptoms predict development of depression and anxiety symptoms. The aim was also to investigate if these relationships are moderated by frequency of physical activity. The study's longitudinal and population-based data was collected from the Environmental Health Study in Västerbotten. The sample consisted of 2336 people between the ages of 18-79 years. To answer the research question, regression analyses were carried out. The main results of the study showed that both depression and anxiety can predict somatic symptoms three years later and that somatic symptoms predict anxiety and depression. Only for the relationship between depression at T1 and somatic symptoms three years later, a positive moderating effect of physical activity could be observed. As for the other investigated interactions, no moderating effects of psysical activity could be observed. However, these results did not reach the effect size for recommended practical significance. Despite small effect sizes the result could be interesting from a public health point of view.
