As the world became increasingly unpredictable due to climate changes, economic disruptions, and unrest,... it is crucial for the architect to evaluate once again, which could be the best route toward building a resilient future for communities. Although architects have limitations to their practice, changes in the way we plan for new neighbourhoods, communities and settlements for better adaptation to contemporary circumstances, could make great differences for residents to cope with difficulties in the uncertain future. This thesis aims to adopt resilient planning into the architectural approach to create a community, that is more robust, resourceful, well- adapt and better maintains essential needs in times of crisis. By defining 3 pillars of resilience: climate, built structure and social connectedness, I analyse the concept through a literature review, then research by design method, and finally, design a proposal of a prototype community to deliver resilience ideas and response to current trends in urban and suburban extensions.

The proposal project chooses Gotland as the context, with the scenario of a new community for Visby city’s growing population. The island and its unique geographic and climate challenges offer comprehensive views into the thesis’s interest. Through this context the project seeks to explore the potential of the prototype and how will it prepare for foreseen circumstances and react to unforeseen future. From theoretical to practical approaches, the prototype community is carefully designed to tackle specific climate and social circumstances, while providing spaces and materials for any needs for future adaptation by local actors. And beneath it all, the designed elements in the project hope to invite and connect residents, from different backgrounds and lifestyles to a common core of life with each other, together.
