Project Oasis is an idea that sprung from the issues the world is facing with the environment, and the issues that Sweden is dealing with regarding mental health. The main goal is to bring different types of people together to fight against loneliness and depression which is common amongst students and seniors today. This is done through merging properties, adding affordable housing and a common garden where the residents spend time together while growing food to eat and sell. The garden is enclosed with corrugated plastic and filled with recycled greenhouses which enables farming year- round. All the material of the project (brick, wood, corrugated plastic, recycled greenhouses etc.) was chosen to blend into the chosen site as much as possible while still being as sustainable as possible.
This is meant to be a project that could and should be applied to many different sites in a city, creating these “oases” with greenery and healthy communities. This would hopefully be the beginning of a new “normal” where we actively work towards social and environmental sustainability. It has been applied to a site in Umeå where the winters are long, to show how it could work and look.
