Abstract [en]
Abstract
Chemical Intolerance (CI) is commonly described as sensitization in the ANS system mediatedby the trigeminal nerve leading to uncomfortable and sometimes debilitating symptoms.Sensitization and habituation are two processes which are related but separate. Cumulativelythey lead to overall system reactivity to stimuli. Functional magnet resonance imaging (fMRI)studies have shown that exposure to chemical irritants activate cortical region associated withsensory salience and inhibition similar to those seen in patients with chronic pain. This studyaims to establish the feasibility of habituating a person with CI to the chemical irritant n-butanolthrough repeated exposure to weak doses while simultaneously activating the inhibitory corticalregions. Repeated exposure to the stimulant operationalizes current knowledge about habituationand inhibition. Two experimental designs are tested. In protocol A, one study participant testscontinuous exposure in an airflow controlled chamber while focusing on cognitive tasks. Inprotocol B, two participants test repeated exposure through smelling the scent plume of glassbottles while doing cognitively strenuous tasks. Other than exposure delivery method theprotocols were as similar as possible. All participants completed 2 pre-test exposures, habituationtraining and post-test exposure. Data as to everyday reaction to chemical irritants was collectedconcurrently from pre-test to 5 weeks after the post-test. All participants showed a decrease inself-reported symptoms in the post test. The participants who followed habituation protocol Balso showed a reduced response to chemical odorants in everyday life. These results indicate thatit is feasible to reduce symptoms of CI suffers through habituation training, though moreextensive research will be required to confirm significance.
Abstract [sv]
I protocol A provaren studie deltagare kontinulerat exponering i en luftkontrollerade kammare samtidigt somkognitiv ansträngande uppgifter görs.
