Abstract [en]

Background

Interim dental bridges often break which causes inconvenience for booth the patient and the dentist. Reinforcing such bridges may create more durable temporary constructions.

Aim

To compare fracture resistance for steel-reinforced bis-acrylic composite bridges, nonreinforced bis-acrylic composites bridges, polymethyl methacrylate bridges and to develop a clinically usable chairside manufacturing process for steel-reinforced bis-acrylic composite bridges.

Hypothesis

Steel-reinforced bis-acrylic composite bridges can withstand greater force before fracture compared to non-reinforced bis-acrylic composite bridges.

The null hypothesis is that there was no difference with respect to the above.

Results

The results showed that there was a statistically significant difference between the flexural strength of the reinforced bis-acrylic bridges and those of the non-reinforced materials. However, there was no significant difference in the flexural strength between Polymethyl methacrylate blocks and bis-acrylic blocks with or without reinforcement.

Conclusion

Steel-reinforcement in bis-acrylic composite bridges shows promise as a cost-effective solution for chairside manufactured interim bridges over longer spans. The study showed that there were significant improvements in withstanding the force required for fracture in steel-reinforced bisacrylic composite bridges when, compared to non-reinforced bridges both from bis-acrylic composite and of polymethyl methacrylate material. To confirm its therapeutic effectiveness and validate its clinical efficacy on patient outcomes, more research is required.
