Experiences of being a parent to a child with congential heart defect : A literature study (English)
Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

Background: Congenital heart defects are structural malformations of the heart and the hearts’ great vessels that already exist at birth. This type of malformation is the most common in liveborn children and is a result of an interference in the development of the heart. Treatment of the disease differs depending on the type of heart defect. The main role of the nurse is to give security and maintain good communication with the family.

Aim: The aim of this study was to describe experiences of being a parent to a child with a congenital heart defect.

Methods: A literature study based on eight qualitative studies. The searches were made in Cinahl, PubMed and Scopus. Fribergs five-step model was used to analyze the studies.

Results: The analysis resulted in four categories with eleven subcategories. The main categories were “Chaos and uncertainty”, “Everyday-life changing”, “Support and information” and “Coping strategies”.

Conclusion: Being parent to a child with congenital heart disease is a challenge. The parents need support and information from health care professionals and their families. The healthcare professionals need to improve communication and give information in an understandable way and to include the parents in the child’s care.
