Abstract [en]

This study investigates various descriptive narratives with the aim of answering the question: "How should young people be informed about environmental and climate issues to foster motivation and engagement?" We employed a focus group design, involving three focus groups with a total of 13 young individuals (aged 16-24). In addition to the semi structured interview guide featuring five different narratives, an online questionnaire was completed prior to the focus groups. A thematic analysis was conducted on the collected material, identifying five themes: clarity, feelings of discomfort, presentation, future, and society. The results indicate that young people value concrete examples of environmental problems and solutions. Negative emotions such as anxiety and shame were recurring phenomena in the focus group discussions. Some participants believed that feelings of shame could motivate behavioral change, but all ultimately agreed that an excess of negative emotions could provoke adverse reactions. The participants also emphasized the importance of how information is presented. Simplifying and explaining statistics and complex terms in an easily understandable manner proved to be significant. Limitations of the study include its limited generalizability, as the study was conducted on a specific group, which may not be representative of the entire population. The study highlights the need for effective communication strategies to enhance environmental engagement among young people. Future research should examine the effectiveness of the proposed strategies.
