In this chapter for the celebration of the Finnish Society for Environmental Social Science 30 years in the form of an anthology (most other chapters are in Finnish), I refer to experiences from the Nordic Environmntal Social Science conference over some 30 years. I discuss why and how it has survived and try to look into the near future of Nordic environmental social science research. I also draw a broader picture of how Nordic environmental socials cience has emerged and discuss its promises and potential pitfalls. My narrative is based on personal insight and experience from some forty years of being engaged in this kind of research, inclusing its evaluation in Norway, Sweden and Finland. In addition, I refer to various research development assessments as well as a simple survey answered by eleven Nordic academic colleagues (without any claim of being representative of all Nordic ESS researchers). Their replies to my quesions have inspired me to search for more information and to awaken some of my own memories of the past. The chapter is relevant for knowing more about how Nordic ESS research has developed from the early 1990s to 2024.
