Abstract [en]
The amount of elders in the world is on the rise. By 2030, 1 in 6 people in the world will be over the age of 60. Although the quality of life, longevity, and social patterns of the aging population have changed for the better globally; designers are still applying outdated structures to modern problems. It’s clear that we need to re-examine the values embedded in the spaces built for elders and create spaces which enable us to stay involved, connected and active as we age. To gain insight into the perspectives of the user group, this project explores the application of accessible design from a global perspective through case studies and literature review, in addition to design investigations to ground the framework within the local urban context of central Umeå. The proposal is a combined third space and residential cohabitation block, with integrated healthcare services, enabling the possibility of connection-through-stages and facilitating encounters through spatial considerations of the relation to the local public to enable intergenerational connection.
