This thesis examines and derives the mathematical foundations of Credibility Theory, a cornerstone framework in actuarial science and insurance pricing. Tracing the historical evolution of the field, the paper analyzes foundational milestones ranging from Mowbray’s Limited Fluctuation model and Bailey’s least-squares regression approach to Bühlmann’s Greatest Accuracy framework and the Bühlmann-Straub model. Beyond the theoretical derivations, the practical utility of these models is demonstrated through contemporary applications, including an empirical study estimating NBA three-point shooting percentages from the 2025–2026 season. The results highlight the strengths and limitations of each framework, illustrating the necessity of the inhomogeneous Bühlmann-Straub model in real-world scenarios where exposure varies significantly.
