Abstract [en]
This paper inaugurates a research agenda that injects realism about death-and-dying into agent-based models of social simulations. We identify critical gaps in how current social simulations simply delete agents. We integrate five thanatology perspectives—socio–cultural, religious–spiritual, professional, historical, and contemporary—to propose a three-level continuity-management framework covering self-, other-, and collective-centred responses to death. We map how this framework expands state spaces for modelling fear of death, grief cascades, institutional adaptations, and alternative imaginaries, and show use-cases in, for example, pandemic response, evacuation, and inheritance dynamics. Finally, we outline methodological pathways for building thanatosensitive agents, overcoming data-collection barriers, and enabling interdisciplinary collaborations that leverage social simulation as an ethical, predictive, and educational laboratory for end-of-life phenomena.
