Sustainable development is one of the biggest discussions worldwide. Today, all around the world different organizations, cooperation’s, companies and people plan for their survival in their own way. In the tourism industry there is a need for sustainable tourism development since the tourism industry tend to have an impact on different destinations. The impacts may affect any of the three aspects of sustainability; economic-, environmental- and social/cultural sustainability. There is a need for guidance on how the tourism industry may affect a destination, and how a destination can work to maximize the positive effects and at the same time minimize the negative effects of tourism. This study will examine a project with the purpose of developing sustainable tourism in Västerbottens county in Sweden. The purpose of that project is to implement global criteria for sustainable tourism development on six different destinations within the county. This study will examine the sustainable tourism development in these different destinations, and compare them with each other through interviews with the people in charge of the sustainable tourism development at each destination and the project leader. The result of this study shows that all destinations work to be more sustainable. The way they are working for sustainability is, on the other hand different from one another. The local context of the destination affects the way they work and the three aspects of sustainability also affect the possibilities and result of their work. The study also shows that clear criteria, indicators and methods as well as sustainable transport are essential to develop sustainable tourism. The key factor for any kind of development is good communication and collaboration with all companies and organizations at the destination.
