UPPLEVELSER AV ARBETSMILJÖN VID HEMARBETE UNDER COVID-192022Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year)), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

This is a qualitative study, and the purpose is to investigate whether hybrid work is a successful way of working in matters of conflict, leadership, and control. The two questions that form the basis of the analysis are I: What does hybrid work mean and how does this affect employees in practice? And II: What impact does hybrid work have on leadership? The essay was written on behalf of and in collaboration with a Swedish government authority. The purpose of the essay has been developed in collaboration with the authority. Semi-structured interviews have been the main approach to data collection. The interviews took place at the relevant authority with both employees and managers. Thematic analysis based on Braune and Clark’s six steps (2006) has been carried out to analyze the data and to produce the results on which the study is based. The main results that emerged are that hybrid work based on several factors entails both advantages and disadvantages. Some of the results that emerged were that change in leadership is central to hybrid work and that it requires more from managers to adapt to this. There have also been results about loss of control for both managers and employees, as well as both a positive and negative impact on mood due to hybrid work.

Arbetslinjen i fokus: En analys av flykting- och etableringspolitiken2015In: FALF 2015 Conference: Book of Abstracts, 2015Conference paper (Refereed)
    Abstract [sv]

Speciality preferences in Dutch medical students influenced by their anticipation on family responsibilities2014In: Perspectives on Medical Eduction, ISSN 2212-277X, Vol. 3, no 6, p. 443-454Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Physician gender is associated with differences in the male-to-female ratio between specialities and with preferred working hours. We explored how graduating students’ sex or full-time or part-time preference influences their speciality choice, taking work-life issues into account. Graduating medical students at Radboud University Medical Centre, the Netherlands participated in a survey (2008–2012) on career considerations. Logistic regression tested the influence of sex or working hour preference on speciality choice and whether work-life issues mediate. Of the responding students (N = 1,050, response rate 83, 73.3 % women), men preferred full-time work, whereas women equally opted for part time. More men chose surgery, more women family medicine. A full-time preference was associated with a preference for surgery, internal medicine and neurology, a part-time preference with psychiatry and family medicine. Both male and female students anticipated that foremost the career of women will be negatively influenced by family life. A full-time preference was associated with an expectation of equality in career opportunities or with a less ambitious partner whose career would affect family life. This increased the likelihood of a choice for surgery and reduced the preference for family medicine among female students. Gender specifically plays an important role in female graduates’ speciality choice making, through considerations on career prospects and family responsibilities.

    Abstract [en]

Background: Importance of breaks for health and recovery is a current issue for working conditions. Both employers and employees must relate to the law which regulates the basic capabilities of the break. Breaks is essential for the efficacy of recovery. The absence of recovery can lead to prolonged stress which can be unhealthy. In Sweden, nurses are a vulnerable group for stress. It may indicate high workload and stress if people are skipping breaks. Aim: The aim was to highlight nurses´ experience of their break at emergency care units. Method: Using a qualitative method, ten nurses at two acute care were interviewed. The interviews were analyzed into three main-categories with seven sub-categories. Results: The experience of breaks was characterized by circumstances before break, both nurses ' expectations on the break and the presence of a heavy workload. Environment for rest, length of breaks and place for rest characterizes the experience. Improved health and reduced stress were consequences of the break, while poor health and increased stress were consequences in the absence of a break. Conclusion: Breaks had importance to nurses because there was an expectation of getting relax, eat, get quiet and think of something else. Heavy workload affected nurses break habits.

    Abstract [en]

The main research problem in this thesis is how unemployed individuals experience and handle the situation of unemployment and how their actions are related to their action possibilities. These are determined by factors like level of education, vocational training, age, citizenship, handicap and level of unemployment on the local labour market. A common assumption is that search behaviour of unemployed individuals strongly affects their possibility to find a job. A central question in this thesis is if individuals’ behaviour has been overemphasised at the expense of real employment opportunities. The empirical part of this thesis is based on longitudinal data collected during a period of high unemployment. The sample is a national random sample existing of 3 500 Swedes interviewed by telephone in the beginning of 1996 and in the end of 1997.

The results show that the expectations of the unemployed to find a job as well as their actual search behaviour are shaped by the situation they are in. The unemployed have job expectations that co-vary with their action possibilities, but as many as 31.3 per cent overestimate their chances and 10.5 per cent underestimate them. This result is based on questions about expectations to obtain a job related to the actual employment situation nearly two years later. Unemployed individuals’ job expectations co-vary with their experiences of the unemployment situation. Those who believe that their job chances are bad have a low mental sense of well-being, while the opposite is found among those who believe that their job chances are good. The sense of having control over the situation is important for an individual’s mental sense of well-being.

Both strategies of activity and adaptation occur among the unemployed. Strategies that are meant to change the situation in an objective are most common, only a minority of the unemployed seem to have adapted to the situation of unemployment.

Workplace skill investments – an early career glass ceiling?: Job complexity and wages among young professionals in Sweden2018In: Work, Employment and Society, ISSN 0950-0170, E-ISSN 1469-8722, Vol. 32, no 2, p. 368-386Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Despite higher educational investments, women fall behind men on most indicators of labour market success. This study investigates whether workplace skill investments set men and women off on different tracks in which the human capital acquired through higher education is either devalued or further developed. A sample of Swedish men and women who recently graduated from five educational programs, leading to occupations with different gender composition, is analysed. Results show that, a few years after graduation, men are more likely than women to acquire complex jobs and that this difference contributes to early career gender gaps in wage and employee bargaining power. The findings do not support the notion that child-related work interruptions provide a main mechanism for sorting women into less complex jobs.

The road to retirement: A life course perspective on labor market trajectories and retirement behaviors2023In: Work, Aging and Retirement, ISSN 2054-4642, E-ISSN 2054-4650Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

While a prolonged working life has been mainly feasible for people with the most advantageous working careers, knowledge about the barriersfor those with vulnerable occupational paths is still scarce. This study explores the conditions for prolonged working life from a perspective onlabor market trajectories. Drawing from a gendered life course perspective and that (dis)advantageous tends to accumulate over time, we investigatethe opportunity structure for the most disadvantaged workers and which characteristics of labor market trajectories can explain thedecision to work longer. To this end, a Swedish longitudinal survey and register data from the Panel Survey of Ageing and the Elderly (PSAE)were used, following people across a substantial part of their working life. With sequence analysis, we identified 5 trajectories that representtypical labor market trajectories from mid-life until retirement age. Our findings showed that labor market precarity in mid-life remained a keycharacteristic until the expected retirement age, showing both early signs of early labor market exit and a precarity trap into a prolonged workinglife. These findings emphasize the need to identify at-risk groups early in their careers and that mid-life interventions are needed to prevent involuntarylabor market exits and to ensure a sustainable working life. In particular, the need to protect older workers with turbulent or precariouslabor market trajectories against labor market risks and retirement schemes that could inadvertently contribute to increased social and economicinequality in later life.

Swedish veterans after Bosnia: the relationship between military deployment and labour market marginalisation2024In: Scandinavian Journal of Military Studies, ISSN 2596-3856, Vol. 7, no 1, p. 62-79Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

While the well-being of the Swedish peacekeepers deployed to Bosnia in the 1990s has received a great deal of attention over the years, very little is known about how these military veterans have fared on the labour market after returning home. In this paper, I provide novel evidence on the relationship between military deployment to Bosnia and adverse outcomes on the labour market. The analysis is based on longitudinal administrative data for a sample of 2,275 young Swedish veterans who served as peacekeepers in Bosnia at some point during the years 1993–1999. I follow these veterans for up to 20 years after deployment. Using propensity score matching based on a rich set of covariates, I estimate the effects of deployment on three broad measures of labour market marginalisation: long-term unemployment, work disability, and social welfare assistance. I find no indication of long-term labour market marginalisation for the veterans. Even though the veterans experienced an increase in the risk of unemployment in the years immediately following their return from service, in the long run their attachment to the labour market is not affected negatively.

The Role of Perceived Organizational Support in Mental Health of Healthcare Workers During the COVID-19 Pandemic: A Cross-Sectional Study2021In: Frontiers in Psychiatry, E-ISSN 1664-0640, Vol. 12, article id 707293Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Background: Data support the link between the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic and mental distress in healthcare workers (HCWs). Although previous studies have documented the association between organizational policies and employees' psychological and mental status, there is still scant evidence regarding the effect of perceived organizational support (POS) on mental distress in HCWs during the pandemic.

Aims: The present study aimed to assess the association between POS and mental distress in HCWs during the COVID-19 pandemic. The role of POS in stress, depressive and trauma symptoms in HCWs was investigated.

Methods: This was an online cross-sectional study in 424 HCWs. Data were collected during the first wave of the pandemic, and included demographics, a 7-item questionnaire assessing POS, the “Patient Health Questionnaire” assessing depressive symptoms, the “Impact of Events Scale Revised,” measuring post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) symptoms and the “Perceived Stress Scale” assessing perceived stress.

Results: The mean POS score was 3.33 [standard deviation:1.85; range 0–7]. Younger (p < 0.001), less experienced (p < 0.001), female (p = 0.002), and non-physician HCWs (p = 0.031) were more likely to report lower self-perceived organizational support than older, male, more experienced physicians. Self-perceived organizational support was significantly and negatively associated with and self-assessed intensity of stress, depressive and traumatic symptoms, after adjusting for putative confounders (p < 0.001).

Discussion: Self-perceived organizational support was significantly associated with HCWs' self-assessed mental status during the pandemic. Organizational support and mental distress should be addressed simultaneously in HCWs during the COVID-19 pandemic to increase resilience among them.

Year)), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

The ‘varieties of capitalism’ school argues that firm-specific skills are more common in coordinated than in liberal economies and that appropriate training is facilitated by employment protection legislation. We compare the level of firm-specific skills across 21 countries with different capacities for labour market coordination. The data provide very limited support for the thesis, showing large variation among the coordinated countries. The results indicate ‘varieties of coordination’, which have different implications for the incidence and consequences of firm-specific skill. Improved operationalization of the skill concept seems urgent.

Study protocol for a qualitative research project exploring an occupational health surveillance model for workers exposed to hand-intensive work2020In: International Journal of Environmental Research and Public Health, ISSN 1661-7827, E-ISSN 1660-4601, Vol. 17, no 17, article id 6400Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

The objective of this study protocol is to describe the development of a process model for occupational health surveillance for workers exposed to hand-intensive work (the HIW-model), and to describe the studies that will explore the model. The studies are designed to: (1) explore stakeholders' experiences of the model, and (2) explore if, and how, the model affects actions for reduction of exposure to hand-intensive work. The study protocol presents a research project that is described as two studies. The first study will explore company representatives' and ergonomists' experiences of the execution of the HIW-model and its various components concerning feasibility and values. Semi-structured interviews will constitute the data source. The second study will explore whether the execution of the HIW-model leads to work environmental changes, such as actions for reduction of exposure to hand-intensive work, and whether these potential actions are based on the ergonomist's feedback of the exposure assessment and the medical health checks. A mixed method approach will be applied, in which the data sources will be comprised of semi-structured interviews, questionnaires, and documents. The project is expected to generate knowledge regarding the values of the HIW-model. The project is anticipated to shed light on factors that facilitate or impede execution of the model from the different stakeholders' perspectives; the employer's as having the legal responsibility for the work environment, and the occupational health service consultants', being the work environment experts supporting the employers.

Safety first: En kvantitativ studie om ledares säkerhetsklimat och safety performance i byggbranschen2022Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

Employers are required to investigate cases of suspected bullying in the workplace. Many employers engage external investigators to ensure that the investigator posesses sufficient competence for the mission and is perceived to be impartal by the parties involved in the investigation. The aim with our present study is to explore how work groups, the business, and the organization are impacted by such an investigation. Through a phenomenological perspective and a qualitative approach we conducted semi-structured interviews with six HR-managers and one HR-worker from seven swedish municipalities, We were given access to experiences and observations, and views on these investigation processes and their effect on the organization. Respondents were sought through e-mailed inquiry of participation to a randomized selection of 100 HR-managers in swedish municipalities. The narratives indicate that a protracted investigation process entails hardship for the work group involved, and has a negative impact on the social work environment, leading to increased risk for ill health in the workplace.

Enhanced Capacity to Act: Managers' Perspectives When Participating in a Dialogue-Based Workplace Intervention for Employee Return to Work2021In: Journal of occupational rehabilitation, ISSN 1053-0487, E-ISSN 1573-3688, Vol. 31, no 2, p. 263-274Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Purpose: To explore if and how a dialogue-based workplace intervention with a convergence dialogue meeting can support a return to work process from the managers' perspective.

Methods: Individual interviews were conducted with 16 managers (10 women and 6 men) who had an employee on sick leave because of stress-induced exhaustion disorder. The manager and employee participated in a dialogue-based workplace intervention with a convergence dialogue meeting that was guided by a healthcare rehabilitation coordinator. The intervention aimed to facilitate dialogue and find concrete solutions to enable return to work. The interviews were analyzed by the Grounded Theory method.

Results: A theoretical model was developed with the core category enhancing managerial capacity to act in a complex return to work process, where the managers strengthened their agential capacity in three levels (categories). These levels werebuilding competence, making adjustments, andsharing responsibilitywith the employee. The managers also learned to navigate in multiple systems and by balancing demands, control and support for the employee and themselves. An added value was that the managers began to take preventive measures with other employees. When sick leave was caused only by personal or social issues (not work), workplace actions or interventions were difficult to find.

Conclusions: From the managers' perspective, dialogue-based workplace interventions with a convergence dialogue meeting and support from a rehabilitation coordinator can strengthen managerial competence and capacity to act in a complex return to work process.

    Abstract [en]

Employability has gained renewed attention in contemporary political discussions during the last ten years. The concept has emerged as a signifier which has replaced the previous way of describing the workforce, thereby producing different kinds of pictures of whom is a desirable worker. This article aims to gain a broader understanding of how discourses on employability position care workers in elderly care as responsible for their own employability. Drawing on the Foucauldian concept of governmentality, transnational policy texts and interview transcripts from interviews with care workers are analysed and compared. The main questions are: How are care workers in elderly care made responsible for their own employability and how does this relate to the responsibility assigned to entities such as employers and the state?

Arbetsgivarattityder till Nätuniversitetet: en förstudie2006Report (Other academic)
    Abstract [sv]

Line managers' influence on employee usage of a web-based system for occupational health management2018In: International Journal of Workplace Health Management, ISSN 1753-8351, E-ISSN 1753-836X, Vol. 11, no 4, p. 193-209Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to investigate line managers' influence on employee usage of a web-based system for occupational health management. Design/methodology/approach Questionnaires were used to measure line managers' transformational leadership at baseline and their change-supportive managerial activities during weeks 16-52. Employee initial (weeks 16-52) and sustained (weeks 53-144) use of the web-based system was measured by extracting their frequency of logins to the system from electronic records. Data were collected from six white-collar organizations from 2011 through 2013. Mixed Poisson regressions were used to analyze the influence of transformational leadership and change-supportive managerial activities on employee usage. Findings As predicted, line managers' change-supportive activities influenced the employees' initial and sustained use of the system. Line managers' transformational leadership had no direct effect on employees' use of the system, however transformational leadership was indirectly associated with employees' initial and sustained use of the system through line managers' change-supportive activities. Originality/value The study adds to the understanding of the role line managers' play during the implementation of occupational health interventions. The findings suggest that the line managers' change-supportive activities directed toward the intervention are important for employees' initial and sustained use of the system. The influence of transformational leadership was indirect, suggesting that line managers may need to direct their leadership behaviors toward the intervention to facilitate implementation.

Desirable skills?: Non-Nordic citizens applying for work permits in Sweden, 1947–19502015In: Labor history, ISSN 0023-656X, E-ISSN 1469-9702, Vol. 56, no 4, p. 481-498Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Sweden's rapid economic growth after the Second World War meant that the native labour supply was incapable of meeting the high demand, especially for industrial labourers. Three agreements on organised collective transfers were signed, but a large majority of the labour migrants came on their own initiative. Not all applicants were equally welcomed. In this article, logistic regressions are used to investigate a sample of 2830 (every fifth) applications to the National Labour Market Board (AMS) from the years 1947–1950; 1367 had an arrangement with a future Swedish employer, while 1463 applicants lacked such an arrangement. The likelihood of being granted a permit was 11 times higher for the first category. Our hypothesis that the chances were better for high-skilled workers proved true only in part; it was valid if they had an employer agreement. Contrary to our assumptions, women had a better chance than men, partly because domestic servants were always permitted and partly because women did not compete with male labour. However, our assumptions with regard to better chances for the young but experienced, and for those applying for the occupation wherein they had their experience held true. A number of official documents revealed the desirability of Sudeten German labourers. They were viewed as skilled, reliable and loyal by employers, labour unions and governmental authorities. This assumption only held true for applicants lacking an employer. This can be viewed as a prolongation of the practice of helping Sudeten German Social Democrats, established in 1938. The intention to help refugees was, however, also evident in the treatment of Baltic and Polish applicants.

Police leaders make poor change agents: leadership practice in the face of a major organisational reform2017In: Policing & society, ISSN 1043-9463, E-ISSN 1477-2728, Vol. 27, no 7, p. 764-778Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

The present article examines expectations on police leaders during major organisational change pressures. Based on policy analysis and interviews with 28 police leaders, the paper seeks to answer the following question: How do police leaders' accounts of leadership practice relate to expectations from higher ranks (above), subordinates (below) and police policies concerning leadership? The results of the paper indicate that police leaders are squeezed into a position between demands from above (top  management) and demands from below (lower organisational tiers). Some of the perceived expectations and practiced leadership actions are also gendered. For example, women feel the need to prove their credibility as leaders and to act in both a caring and daring manner, something that is not evident for male police leaders. Furthermore, the material indicates a considerable mismatch between the different sets of demands expressed in interviews and expectations regarding leadership expressed in police policy discourse, wherein core values and leadership criteria are articulated. In conclusion, the findings indicate a discrepancy between official rhetoric and practice, where the leadership constructed at a policy level deviates from leadership constructed in practice. This discrepancy is argued to represent an effective barrier for change initiatives, and hence the idea that police leaders will be able to function as agents of change promoting organisational reform is highly uncertain.

Utvärdering av Jobba friskt: delrapport 20062006Report (Other academic)
    Abstract [sv]

Shared or different realities: Self-other agreement on constructive and passive leadership and employee outcomes2020In: Leadership & Organization Development Journal, ISSN 0143-7739, E-ISSN 1472-5347, Vol. 41, no 1, p. 37-51Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Purpose: The purpose of this paper is to explore the consequences of self-other agreement (SOA) between leaders and subordinates on constructive and passive leadership behaviors for employee well-being, performance and perception of learning climate.

Design/methodology/approach: Questionnaire ratings of 76 leaders and 211 subordinates in a forest industrial company on full-range leadership and subordinate ratings of well-being, work performance and learning climate have been used in this paper. The data were analyzed using polynomial regression with response surface analysis.

Findings: SOA on constructive leadership (transformational leadership and contingent reward) was related to subordinates' perception of a positive learning climate. SOA on passive leadership (management-by-exception passive) reduced subordinates' performance, while disagreement reduced their well-being.

Practical implications: It is important to give leaders feedback on their own and their subordinates’ ratings of not only constructive leadership behaviors but also passive behaviors.

Originality/value: The study demonstrates how SOA on leaders' constructive and passive leadership behaviors impacts employees' well-being, performance and work climate.

'Not a Problem Until it Becomes a Problem': A Qualitative Study of Values and Risks of In-house Family Ties in Swedish Workplaces2016In: Nordic Journal of Working Life Studies, E-ISSN 2245-0157, Vol. 6, no 4, p. 67-86Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

In-house family ties at workplaces occur in most contexts, and are associated with both advantages and disadvantages. On the basis of 40 interviews with human resource managers at Swedish workplaces, the values and risks of in-house family ties and their importance within the workplace are analyzed jointly, thus allowing for a holistic perspective. The interviews reveal values and risks on a strategic level, for day-to-day operations, for the social work environment, and on the level of individuals. Crucially, even when in-house family ties are perceived as uncomplicated, there is a latent risk that problems might arise. The interpretation of the role of in-house family ties is also strongly related to whether they are paired with asymmetrical (vertical) power relations. It also depends heavily on the chosen perspective-that of the organization, the social work environment, the individual, or the broader society-and the perceived advantages tend to come with corresponding inverted disadvantages.

Stress och strategier i omsorgsarbete: En kvalitativ studie om medarbetares upplevelse av samvetsstress i hemtjänsten och strategier för att hantera detta2023Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

Analyzing self-report data: assessing basic psychological needs in education and at work2022Doctoral thesis, comprehensive summary (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

The overall aims of this thesis were 1) to investigate how to measure and model basic psychological needs in higher education and work contexts, specifically in Swedish-speaking populations, and 2) to analyze the psychometric properties of basic psychological needs self-report instruments.

The thesis consists of four studies and a summary. The main concepts studied were the basic psychological needs for autonomy, competence, and relatedness, as conceptualized in the Self- Determination Theory (SDT).

The first study identified subgroups of early career psychologists characterized by their ratings on self- efficacy, psychological flexibility, and basic psychological need satisfaction. The results show that the groups differed in self-rated health, well-being, and intention to leave their profession. Higher basic psychological need satisfaction, self-efficacy, and psychological flexibility were associated with better self-rated health and well-being.

The second study was an extensive psychometric evaluation of the need satisfaction and frustration scale (NSFS) in a large sample of Swedish workers. The analyses supported measurement invariance longitudinally and for gender, as well as the nomological validity of the scale. The dimensionality analyses supported a six-dimensional structure of the NSFS that takes small cross-loadings into account in an exploratory structural equation modeling representation. However, poor discrimination between need satisfaction and need frustration was present for some items.

The third study translated a revised Swedish version of the NSFS, adapted to the educational domain, and validated it in a sample of Swedish university students. Dimensionality analyses supported using the NSFS as a three-dimensional measure of students' need for autonomy, need for competence, and need for relatedness. In support of nomological validity, each need uniquely contributed to predicting perceived stress and academic burnout. However, unexpectedly, autonomy did not provide incremental value beyond competence and relatedness in predicting life satisfaction and academic engagement.

The fourth study translated and adapted the basic psychological need satisfaction and frustration scale (BPNSFS) to Swedish and the educational domain (BPNSFS-ED). This study also investigated the coherence between the BPNSFS-ED and the NSFS. Factor analyses showed support for using the scale as a six- dimensional measure of students' needs satisfaction and need frustration. The coherence between the BPNSFS-ED and the NSFS was moderate, and the BPNSFS-ED appears to be a more SDT coherent measure of students’ basic psychological needs.

The main contribution of this thesis was providing researchers with a validated self-report instrument to assess basic psychological needs in Swedish education. The results also highlight challenges with measuring and modeling basic psychological needs and question whether items from well-used basic needs self-rating scales properly tap into the concept of need frustration. Finally, the results show that the need for autonomy seems to differ between basic psychological needs instruments which calls for mindfulness when choosing an instrument to measure basic psychological needs, and when comparing results across studies. Based on the results of this thesis, the BPNSFS-ED self-report instrument appears to be a good choice for researchers interested in assessing basic psychological needs in Swedish education.

Servant Leadership – det motivationshöjande ledarskapet?: En fallstudie i hur man kan öka medarbetares motivation, delaktighet och engagemang genom att förändra ledarskapet2023Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

This study deals with the impact of industrialisation and urbanisation on the living conditions of aged men and women. By studying labour force participation, savings and pensions, the role of the family, and the extent of dependency of aged men and women from a gender and class perspective, continuities and changes between pre-industrial and industrial times are examined. The main focus is placed on the situation of elderly persons living in the town of Sundsvall between 1830 and 1930. This town became the commercial centre of one of the largest saw-mill districts in the world at the end of the nineteenth century. The residence patterns of old men and women in Sundsvall are also compared with those in two other Swedish industrialised urban areas; the capital Stockholm and the textile centre Norrköping.

According to modernisation theorists, industrialisation and urbanisation led to an increase in dependency in old age, due to weakening family ties and unemployment. This study shows the complexity of the issue. It is true that some sources reveal a declining proportion of men participating in the labour force at the very end of the period of observation, but this was primarily due to the introduction of the national pension system in 1914. On the other hand, other records show a stability or even an increasing proportion of elderly men and women in the labour market.

By contrast with previous studies of the residence patterns of aged persons, this dissertation shows a very high percentage of elderly women living alone in all three urban areas selected for study. However, this was not solely a sign of isolation, since the vast majority of those elderly living in households of their own had children residing in the vicinity. Furthermore, many old men and women shared households with their children, although this pattern was less common among the working class. The role of off-spring appears to have been important both in pre-industrial and industrial times. The residence patterns of the urban elderly were probably influenced by traditional rural living arrangements, to the extent that old couples and their married children often lived close to each other but usually maintained households of their own. Old parents and their adult children might have preferred to live in separate households instead of crowding in with each other.

The unmarried elderly were probably most affected by the transformations taking place at the end of the nineteenth century. A considerable number of them migrated late in life, leaving all their relatives behind. Therefore, they became highly vulnerable. Unmarried men tended to be more exposed to the dangers of urban life. They probably experienced tougher working conditions, had weaker social networks, and could not manage on their own to the same extent as women. Therefore, a larger propor-tion of men than women ended up in the workhouse.

Handling plurality and dealing with difficult work experiences: a comparative study of human service professionals' work with individuals with intellectual disabilities2018In: Journal of Policy and Practice in Intellectual Disabilities, ISSN 1741-1122, E-ISSN 1741-1130, Vol. 15, no 1, p. 36-42Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

This article examines how administrators in social services (n=70) and habilitation staff in healthcare (n=40) in Sweden experience difficult work situations in their daily work with people with intellectual disabilities (ID). The research aim was a) to scrutinize the most typical aspects of difficult working situations and b) to apply a comparative analysis of differences and similarities, where the respondents’ organizational affiliations are taken into account. The results are primarily based on a content analysis, although contextual standardized questions were also included. The results revealed that experiences of difficult work situations were associated with (1) structure, (2) professional role, (3) relationships, and (4) collaboration. The study also demonstrate that the respondents’ experiences of difficulties did not correspond to work dissatisfaction or unclear goals. On the contrary, handling this plurality within a specific organizational context was interpreted as an important aspect of professionalism. We argue that the different characteristics of the organizations reflect two different institutional logics. While the administrators mainly operated within an administrative logic based on a regulatory framework, the habilitation staff operated within a therapeutic logic based on a cognitive framework. The organizations different norms and rule systems, seem to have influenced when, and to what extent, everyday situations were experienced and defined as difficult when working with people with intellectual disabilities. This suggest that organizational context are important to acknowledge in order to understand professional experiences within intellectual disability services.

Work satisfaction among human service professionals2019In: Journal of Intellectual Disability Research, ISSN 0964-2633, E-ISSN 1365-2788, Vol. 63, no 7, p. 889-889Article in journal (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

Introduction: Work satisfaction among professionals in human service organisations is often viewed as an important aspect of quality – for professionals but also for those who are receiving the support. Professionals who report high levels of job satisfaction also provide services of higher quality compared to those who are dissatisfied. For the service users this is considered as central especially for those with long‐lasting support such as persons with intellectual disabilities. The presentation demonstrate work satisfaction among professionals in social service, school and health care working with people with intellectual disability.

Methods: Data was collected using a digital questionnaire and the presentation is based on written excerpts (n = 925) on an open‐ended question from a total of 333 respondents.

Results: Results showed that positive work experiences were associated with autonomy, competence, nature of the work, collaboration, response and feedback, work environment, support and the target group. In the presentation we provide empirical evidence for these different aspects of work satisfaction.

Implications: To conclude the study contributes with knowledge concerning important factors and circumstances that provides professionals within the field of intellectual disability with work satisfaction. More research is needed to understand job satisfaction among human service professionals in the field of intellectual disabilities.

European police recruits' views on ideal personal characteristics of a police officer2020In: Policing & society, ISSN 1043-9463, E-ISSN 1477-2728, Vol. 30, no 10, p. 1243-1262Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

As societies are becoming more heterogeneous and complex, the role of the police is becoming more demanding. To fulfil this role, police officers need several widely recognised skills and personal qualities, but less is known about how they are valued by police recruits. Thus, we have examined views of police recruits in six European countries on three competencies or characteristics of known importance for police work: knowledge, leadership, and the ability to form good relations with citizens. We have also explored variations in views of recruits in different organisations and changes in their views during their training. For these purposes, we used survey data collected in the RECPOL project. Since the data were collected from different populations and at different times, the analysis is based on measurement invariance methodology, and one of the aims was to highlight the importance of rigorous appraisal of the quality and comparability of similar survey data using such methods. The results reveal both differences and similarities in views of recruits in the surveyed countries and changes during training. Police culture appears to be a significant factor, as more items in the applied instrument could be validly used in comparisons of recruits in organisations with similar police traditions. The results also showed interesting contrasts, e.g. new recruits in Sweden rated good relations with citizens more highly than recruits in organisations with a more military history, but this pattern changed during training, presumably due to influences of the recruitment process, training and culture within the organisations.

Ett säkert arbete: En kvantitativ studie om industrimedarbetares attityd och engagemang i säkerhetsarbete2024Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

To integrate new employees into organizational norms, expectations and work-related procedures, organizations use onboarding with varied results. In 2020, Covid-19 forced organizations to have their employees working from home, if possible, to reduce the spread of the virus. Many organizations were caught off guard by this, as processes and routines, including onboarding processes, suddenly had to be performed in a distributed way through virtual means, which to many led to unforeseen consequences. The purpose of this study was to examine how new employees were affected by going through a distributed onboarding process, as well as how their continued distributed working circumstances changed. The purpose was also to contribute points of improvement for the studied organization, grounded in the study’s results combined with prior research on the topic of onboarding. Nine interviews were conducted with employees hired in the span of 2020-2022 in the Nordic part of a global organization where 250 employees work distributed in offices spread across Norway, Sweden, Finland, and Denmark. The results show varying challenges in relation to the participants’ experiences of distributed onboarding processes, where feedback, information sharing and gathering, relational aspects, communication, insiders, organizational culture, and role clarity were all affected in part by the distributed conditions, as were individual factors. The study contributes insights around the subject of distributed onboarding for the organization, but also gives a direction for further research to reach a deeper understanding of how organizations and individuals are affected by distributed conditions.

From calling to a scheduled vocation: Swedish male and female students' reflections on being a doctor2007In: Medical teacher, ISSN 0142-159X, E-ISSN 1466-187X, Vol. 29, no 1, p. e1-e8Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

BACKGROUND: All over the world an increasing number of women are entering medical schools. Soon women will constitute half of the physician workforce in Scandinavia. However, specialty segregation persists. Reports have shown different motives among male and female doctors to be, but the impact of gender, i.e. how ongoing social constructions of femininity and masculinity influence the development of professionalism, is not fully described.

AIM: The purpose of this study was to explore views and visions among second-year students at a Swedish Medical School, and to identify challenges for education and workforce planning.

METHODS: After receiving research ethics board approval, all students participating in the course 'Professional development', including a task to write a free-text essay on the theme 'to be a doctor', were invited to share their essays for analysis. Of 138 (40% men) students in 2002, 104 (39% men) accepted. The texts were analysed according to grounded theory.

RESULTS: Students held 'doctorship' to be an outstanding profession of commitment, authority and duty. Fears were exposed, especially among women, regarding how to fit demands of self-sacrifices and balancing a private life. Belonging to a new generation, they conceived gender equity as self-evident. Actual working conditions were met with disapproval, as did an all-embracing calling. A scheduled vocation was hoped for. They relied on the mass of women to implement change. Women's 'other' values, alluding to family orientation, were expected to alter working conditions and also give men more leisure time. Despite equity conviction, segregating gender patterns in students' representations, interactions with tutors and future prospects were disclosed.

CONCLUSIONS: Students' arguments raise challenges for medical educators and planners regarding professional values, medical socialization and specialty recruitment. The new generation requires a renewed Hippocratic Oath, gender-aware role models and practice sites. Swedish students' arguments are compared with current international literature.

Business as usual?: doing gender equality in Swedish forestry work organisations2020Doctoral thesis, comprehensive summary (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

The title of this thesis is Business as usual? Doing gender equality in Swedish forestry work organizations and while the latter part, the subtitle, is rather self-explanatory, the former part can be read in different ways. The aim of the thesis is to increase the understanding of the doing of gender equality in the male dominated work organizations of the Swedish forestry sector, and thereby contribute both theoretical and empirical understanding regarding how doing gender equality in the forestry sector relates both to notions of gender and notions of organizations. Forestry has traditionally been characterized by physically demanding, manual harvesting work, with practical and symbolic associations with men and certain forms of masculinity. The forestry sector still remains one of the most gender segregated labour forces in Sweden, all while gender equality has been addressed to some extent during the 2000s. The theoretical frame of reference of the present thesis is rooted in feminist organizational research and the doing gender framework. Based on a perspective of reality as socially constructed and by deploying a feminist participatory action research methodology, my analysis focuses on how complexities of meanings are ascribed to the actions and processes, that are framed as gender equality and I have qualitatively analysed empirical material, such as policy documents, interviews and written testimonies of sexual harassment, that explicate these aspects of doing gender equality in organizations. The thesis is built experiences from two different research- and development projects and consists of 5 articles and a synthetizing chapter.

The results highlight how doing gender equality relates to notions of gender as well as notions of organization. In both Article I, where policies were studied and in Article II, that builds on interviews, women are in general constructed as the “other”, as people who lack (forestry) skills and competences and who are in need of help or as contributors of social and emotional competence. Men and masculine norms are mainly absent from the doing of gender equality in this material, just as notions of the organization. But, deploying a feminist participatory action research methodology can bring forward other perspectives on gender equality, as shown in Articles IV and V, such as the articulations of men and masculinities. Further, this thesis shows that gender equality is in general understood by the organizations studied as a process that regards gender, predominantly women, rather than the organization. Put differently, gender equality work in the forestry sector does not to any significant extent, affect what is perceived as the core activities in these organizations. However, the overarching depoliticized and degendered business case framing that mainly evades accounting for the role of the organization when doing gender equality, is disrupted by the testimonies of #slutavverkat explored in Article III. Here, the political dimension of gender equality is highlighted by stories of men’s behaviours (reprehended but at the same time sanctioned) in organizations that come at the expense of women’s rights to a workplace free from condescending comments, harassment and sexual violence. While previous research has pointed to the importance of gender awareness, and gender aware leadership, in organizations that wish to succeed with their gender equality work, this thesis suggests that there is also a need for “gendered organization awareness” in order to understand and discuss not only how gender is done in organizations but also how everyday organizational life, such as notions of competence, is done and how that in turn relates to gender and power. This underlines the need for organizations to make room for conflicts and politics and to let the otherwise marginalized voices contribute to more nuanced interpretations of gender equality.

The title Business as usual? encompasses the starting points for the thesis work as well as the main findings. Read with an emphasis on business, the seemingly all-embracing business case rhetoric’s that encloses the official narratives of gender equality in the forestry sector are visualized, while emphasizing as usual denotes to the sectors resistance to do other than what it usually does. Read as the hole saying, business as usual, that title signals that gender equality work is done in ways that not interfere with forestry core activities, thus making gender equality work in the organizations side streamed or de-coupled. Yet, read with emphasis on the question mark, opens up for the subversive potential that nevertheless exists when more multifaceted ways of making sense of gender equality are articulated and as the findings suggests that there are ways to re-gender and re-politicize organizational gender equality work in the context of forestry work organizations.

"Just nu är det lite trafikstockning.....": En studie om hur studie- och yrkesvägledare upplever sin psykosociala miljö.2012Independent thesis Basic level (professional degree), 60 credits / 90 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

Dignity: A Prerequisite for Attractive Work in Elderly Care2017In: Society, health and vulnerability, E-ISSN 2002-1518, Vol. 8, no 1, article id 1322455Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

This article explores discourses of new public management (NPM) and dignity at work by considering how attractive work is represented by managers and professionals in Swedish elderly care. The analysis, guided by critical discursive psychology, uses qualitative interviews with 31 managers, nurses, physiotherapists and occupational therapists at nine workplaces. Three storylines of how attractive work is represented were identified: salary and status, high-quality care, and working conditions and competence. These storylines revealed two strategies by which dignity is attained and defended: strategies of resistance and strategies of organizational citizenship. A conclusion is that identity, power and position are key aspects for interpreting how managers and professionals navigate between discourses of dignity. Work in elderly care is under pressure from the major shift towards neoliberalism and the techniques of NPM. Discourses upholding NPM are present to only a limited extent, whilst discourses rejecting NPM principles and safeguarding dignity at work and dignity as care providers constitute the basis of the representations. Hence, another conclusion is that the consequences of NPM undermine prior conceptions of the importance of care work. Although dignity at work appears to be a prerequisite for attractive work, it may be an unattainable goal for organizations.

Postfeminism as Coping Strategy: Understandings of Gender and Intragroup Conflict among Swedish Welfare Workers2023In: NORA: Nordic Journal of Feminist and Gender Research, ISSN 0803-8740, E-ISSN 1502-394X, Vol. 31, no 1, p. 76-90Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

This paper explores how workers in the women-dominated public sectorin Sweden speak about and make sense of gender and intragroup conflictand the consequences of this way of thinking and acting for genderequality at work. Using qualitative interviews with 26 first-level managersand employees, we introduce an analytical framework that employs criticaldiscourse psychology and the conceptualization of a postfeministsensibility at work. We identified three competing meanings (postfeministstorylines) of gender and intragroup conflict: Supporting the genderedmeanings of conflict, Unawareness of conflict’s gendered meanings andCounteracting the gendered meanings of conflict. The welfare workersacknowledged the role of gender in intragroup conflicts but, paradoxically, constructed their own workplaces as gender neutral, withoutinequalities related to gender. We interpret these three postfeminist storylinesas coping strategies; that is, as ways to make sense of the falsepromise of gender egalitarianism that characterizes the Swedish labourmarket.

    Abstract [en]

This chapter introduces theoretical and empirical perspectives on the gendering of work organisations, working conditions, and work relations, including health and safety at work. It discusses why gendered norms at work continue to be an important field of study and why Sweden is an interesting case for exploring the gendering of labour markets and jobs. In particular, the chapter discusses how the gendering of work organisations and jobs in health and social care have consequences for women working in these sectors. The chapter also presents the organisation of this volume and the contribution of each of its chapters.

Sexual Harassment and Gender-based Violence: A Study of Staff and Students at Umeå University2022Report (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

Sexual harassment and other forms of offensive behaviour are serious problems within academia. They affect students and staff alike and are found in all disciplines. In this study, we consider the various forms and expressions of harassment. In addition to sexual harassment, this includes bullying, cyberbullying, victimisation and incivility, all of which we examine under the umbrella term gender-based violence.

The purpose of this report is to describe the occurrence of and analyse the corelation between sexual harassment, and other forms of gender-based violence, and the work environment and health of staff and students at Umeå University. The report is based on a national study of the prevalence of sexual harassment in academia conducted within the framework of The Research and Collaboration Programme on Gender-based Violence.

In answer to a direct question regarding whether the respondent had been subjected to unwanted sexual attention in their place of work/study, 2.2% of staff and 6.4% of students replied in the affirmative. Among women, prevalence is higher among female students than female employees, with 7% of this group having been subjected to such behaviour, and the same is true of men, with more male students (5.5%) reporting incidents. When the question of sexual harassment is broken down into specific situations and acts, the figure increases significantly, with as many as 51% of female employees and 29% of men stating that they had experienced at least one of the specified situations. Notably, levels among female employees of Umeå University are significantly higher than the figure for the Swedish higher education sector as a whole. The corresponding figure for students at Umeå University is, however, lower than the national average for the higher education sector, with 16% of women and 9% of men responding in the affirmative.

There are also notable disparities between the sexes with regard to bullying, with twice as many women as men reporting problems, and reporting a higher frequency of offences. However, bullying is reported to a greater extent by male than female students. There are also gender disparities in incivility, with significantly more female employees reporting incidents than men.

Sexism in the form of sexual harassment and gender-based violence can of course be understood as a means of academic reproduction; i.e., as one of the components that maintains and recreates the various structures, hierarchies and gender-inequitable workplaces in academia. As this study makes clear, sexual harassment and gender-based violence create a systematic and recurring pattern of unwelcome events that can be understood as institutional mechanisms and behaviours that risk being normalised. This also produces other problems in addition to gender inequality. In the study, we find clear correlations for both staff and students between sexual harassment and other forms of gender-based violence and experiences of the psychosocial and organisational work environment and health.

The concept of intragroup conflict in relation to gender and well-being in women-dominated work2021In: Gendered norms at work: new perspectives on work environment and health / [ed] Britt-Inger Keisu; Susanne Tafvelin; Helene Brodin, Springer, 2021, p. 197-213Chapter in book (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

This chapter reviews the current state of the science on intragroup conflicts and its impact on employee well-being. It also explores how task, relationship and process conflicts relate to gender perceptions and practices among welfare workers in women-dominated work. The analysis, guided by the theory of intragroup conflict, uses qualitative interviews with 26 managers and their employees at three workplaces in Sweden. The review concludes that, although conflicts are emotional, not all of them affect welfare workers' well-being over time. Only relationship conflicts seem to be hurtful to employee well-being. The empirical analysis suggests that intragroup conflicts are inherently emotional, with workers putting their emotions aside during their professional efforts to raise standards and improve the quality of practice at work. Task conflicts emerge both horizontally and vertically, whereas process and relationship conflicts are, to a high degree, related to status and power, that is, produced vertically. The empirical analyses reveal no differences between the ways in which men and women in welfare occupations perceive or practise intragroup conflict, calling into question the societal discourse that women are not very good at fighting and that they fight more than men.
