Public organizations flying in the cloud: A case study of cloud computing value creation in Moldova central public administration2015Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year)), 10 poäng / 15 hpOppgave
    Abstract [en]

As information technology (IT)  becomes an integral part of society, public sector organizations have witnessed an increasing shift in how they deliver services to citizens. One area of IT that has  contributed to this transformation in service delivery has been in the domain of cloud computing. Extant research  has focused on the  factors related to the  adoption of cloud computing within public sector organizations, however, little is known about how cloud computing creates value in public sector administration. Addressing this, we conduct a case study research on the Moldova central public administration to investigate how cloud computing enhances value in public service delivery. Accordingly, we identify seven ways cloud computing enhances value creation in public administration. Among those values, faster service delivery, transparency and accountability are values rarely highlighted in the previous academic research. Based on our results, we propose solutions that public administration should take into consideration when utilizing cloud computing as a service delivery model.

Framtidens verktyg för arbetsmiljöarbete: En studie om vilka förutsättningar IT erbjuder verksamheter i deras arbetsmiljöarbete2019Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 poäng / 15 hpOppgave
    Abstract [en]

The influence and impact that digitalisation have in our society has not gone unnoticed, every aspect of our daily lives have more or less been digitalized so that we can effectively communicate, share and gain information and knowledge through IT solutions. Businesses and organisations are being more effective and efficient by embedding IT solutions as a strategy into their daily work. A particular field that has been stagnant through this revolution is how businesses and organisations manage their workplace environment and the purpose of this study is therefore to shed light on, and contribute with knowledge about, the potential that IT have when it comes to managing organisational occupational health and safety. We look further into a graphical user interface such as dashboard to gain an insight on how it could be used as a tool to monitor progress within occupational health and safety. The methods used in this exploration are integrated approaches which contains both qualitative and quantitative methods, the data was collected through interviews and surveys in a public organisation. The results of the study displays three main concerns which are caused by the lack of systematic approach while working with occupational health and safety. These three concerns are identified as feedback challenges, lack of consistency and absence of appropriate actions. The study further highlights which key factors that need to be successful in order to create and maintain a healthy occupational health and safety. With the result of our study, businesses and organisations can gain an understanding and insight on what type of advantages can be gained by using IT in order to promote a systematic approach while dealing with a challenging task as the workplace environment.

From project to practice: Creating conditions for digital healthcare implementation using the CFIR framework2021Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year)), 10 poäng / 15 hpOppgave
    Abstract [en]

Despite the phenomenal innovations and huge investments in healthcare, it is evident that some digital transformation innovations in the healthcare context fail to meet their desired outcomes. Whilst some researchers argue that this is partly due to ineffective implementation, others argue otherwise. Essentially, there is an outspoken need to evaluate implementation processes, and one way to do so is through the use of an implementation framework, where one such framework showing great potential is the Consolidated Framework for Implementation Research (CFIR). By using a qualitative case study through the lenses of the CFIR, the study carries out a summative evaluation and examination of a previously conducted implementation process in a region in the north of Sweden, with the purpose of developing a greater understanding of implementation processes in order to improve patient care, as well as experiences and outcomes of digital transformation implementations. The study successfully identifies factors of both success and challenge in relation to implementation processes, where some of the success factors include the involvement of caregivers in the process and competition of private healthcare providers, whilst some of the challenges include deficient involvement of end-users as well as lack of structure. The study unearths some lessons which can be used as a guide for future implementations within the healthcare context, but also other contexts as well.

Nyckelfaktorer för en designs slutskede2012Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 poäng / 15 hpOppgave
    Abstract [en]

The final stage of a designers work is always a bit tricky. Design is an abstract phenomenon and no one can tell when a design is really finished. The design process that designers work within has been thoroughly studied but cannot be truly mapped with strict constraints which the designer can follow to succeed. Therefore, in this paper we take a look at the final stage in the design process. The main goal is to get more knowledge and highlight key factors about what designers face when they are about finish their design or what forces them to leave a project that can stay in development for eternity. Together with theories from a literature research and real life experience from people in the design profession we have looked at the issue. The results show that the key elements that are common in the final stage of the design process include evaluation, limitation and trusting your own judgment.

DIGITALA SYSTEM INOM PRESTATIONSLEDNING: En fallstudie om digitala systems återspegling av medarbetares arbetsprestation och påverkan på motivation2018Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 180 hpOppgave
    Abstract [en]

Organisations are in need of systems and methods to evaluate their performances.Performance management systems are used to gather information about theorganizational performance, in order to give management increased control. This paperexamines digital applications within performance management systems and the wayindividuals regard the applications to reflect their performance as well as how theyaffect their work motivation. Our study focuses on one company in the contact centerbusiness, referred in this paper as Service AB. In this paper, we aim to find out howindividuals´ work motivation is affected and what they think of digital applications’representation of their work performance on a general level. To collect data, we conducta survey and group interviews with workers from Service AB. The results from thisstudy show that there are three main factors - fairness, relevance and understanding -that affect the individual’s perception of how well their work is digitally represented.Furthermore, this study shows that digital applications within a performancemanagement system have an impact on the workers motivation. The paper also showsthat workers think that the digital data doesn´t fully represent their work performance.

Från data till kunskap: En kvalitativ studie om interaktiv visualisering av big data genom dashboards2016Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 poäng / 15 hpOppgave
    Abstract [en]

Rapid growing volumes of data demands new solutions in terms of analysing and visualizing. The growing amount of data contains valuable information which organizations in a more digitized society need to manage. It is a major challenge to visualize data, both in a static and interactive way. Through visualization of big data follows several opportunities containing risk assessment and decision basis. Previous research indicates a lack of standards and guidelines considering the development of interactive dashboards. By studying factors of success from a user-centered perspective we proceeded with a qualitative approach using semi-structured interviews. In addition to this we performed a thorough examination of existing literature in this particular field of research. A total of eight interviews were held, all eight respondents had experience from using or developing dashboards. The results indicates that user experience is an important yet not a sufficiently used principle. They also indicates challenges concerning the management of big data and particularly visualizing it. The results developed into a model which illustrates guidelines and vital components to orchestrate when developing a dashboard. A user-centered approach should pervade the entire developing process. Interactive functionalities are rather a necessity than a recommendation. With interactiveness comes drill-down functionalities which leads to a more intuitively practice. User experience is an essential component of the model, bringing light to individual customisations as well as it makes allowances to a large target group. The last component highlights the importance of early prototyping and an iterative approach to software development. The conclusion of the study is our complete model which brings opportunities to transform big data to great knowledge.

När genväg blir omväg: En kvalitativ studie om workarounds komplexa natur och dess mångsidiga konsekvenser i en ISO-certifierad organisation2016Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 poäng / 15 hpOppgave
    Abstract [en]

This qualitative study examines positive and negative effects on effectivity as a result of alternative processes (workarounds) performed within an ISO-certificated organizations information system. To identify these workarounds we used contextual inquiry. This gave us an understanding of how the information systems users actually practice their work. The result of our acquired data revealed six major workarounds. To analyze these workarounds in relation to its complicated context we utilized three theoretical models. This gave us a broad understanding of each of the workarounds and made it possible to understand why each workaround was conducted, its implications on effectivity and what kind of a challenge/dilemma it posed. The analysis indicated that the workarounds had what we deduced as negative impact on the organizations effectivity as a whole. Many of the workarounds could have been seen as very effective alternatives to the designed work process but only if valued in a micro-context. The fact that they still occur are most likely the result of the fact that the users of the information system lack understanding of how the organization and its processes are structured as a whole and how their work as well as how they perform it is part of a bigger picture. Finally we present how future research, based on this study, could focus on developing a better model to understand the complicated context. We also propose that studies could investigate the possibility of shaping an ISO-standard which is responsive to the diversity of organizations actual work processes while still ensuring a qualitative standard.

Exploiting Information: Seeking Long-term Preservation of organisational knowledge2013Konferansepaper (Annet vitenskapelig)
    Abstract [en]

Long-term preservation of organisational knowledge gives the business opportunities to reusestored knowledge. This preservation of knowledge is present both in the organisation as such, found explicitly in the organisational stock, and also in the individual workers, implicit intheir flow of action. Theoretically have the reuse of knowledge been named organisationalmemory and also been addressed in knowledge management. In a single case-study of amanufacturing company, the authors study the utilisation of product configuration information(PCI) and its role in meeting requirements on long-time preservation of product-relatedknowledge. This structured and standardised information is used throughout the organisation, serving as a base for both organisational and individual knowledge for the entire company.Since the information has been used in the same way for decades it is a part of theorganisation´s culture and influences structures and procedures connected to the informationbase. The result of the study implies that usage of PCI grants the individual worker a highdegree of task-related freedom as well as intra-organisational mobility. The downside for theindividuals is the long time period it takes to get familiar with PCI due to its complexity. Forthe organisation as such, PCI provides a stable stock of knowledge which is available overextended periods of time, drastically reducing dependence upon individual workers.

Two-Sided Digital Platforms as Enablers for Circular Economy Business Models2022Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (Two Years)), 20 poäng / 30 hpOppgave
    Abstract [en]

The circular economy has become one of the most crucial business plans for organizations. There is rapid progress in using digital technologies, especially two-sided digital platforms as enablers for various businesses and start-ups to grow rapidly. However, these digital platforms are facing significant obstacles and barriers in advertising their products, growing sales, and improving profitability. There is not enough scientific research and scholarly work that has been undertaken or focused on the strategies to promote the circular economy from the aspect of information systems. The purpose of this research aims to explore the major possible contributing techniques that can be implemented to enhance the utilization of digital platforms as enablers for the circular economy. In this study, qualitative exploratory research has been considered as an adequate and suitable scheme for generating a contextual understanding of the phenomenon. 11 semi-structured interviews were conducted. The interviews were among individuals and within several organizations that are associated with the circular economy. According to the data collected from the survey, the most visible elements that affected the decision of the participants while using the digital platform are price, quality, sustainability, and location. Based on the findings, this study makes critical recommendations to tackle the problems that hinder the development of the circular economy among individuals, companies, and organizations. The recommended themes for circular economy strategies are to increase customer satisfaction, focus on opportunities, improve trustworthiness (online reviews), set up reliable return policies, and increase stakeholder engagement

Deep Roots, New Sprouts: Leveraging AI Capabilities for Business Value in Incumbents2024Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (Two Years)), 20 poäng / 30 hpOppgave
    Abstract [en]

This thesis explores the manifestation of AI capabilities in an incumbent within the forest industry for generating business value. The primary research gap identified is the lack of empirical evidence on how AI capabilities contribute to business value in incumbents. Drawing upon the AI capability framework and interviews with leadership roles, the research identifies and categorizes AI capabilities into Human, Intangible, Tangible, and Governance dimensions. Theoretical contributions include adding Governance as a distinct dimension to the existing AI capability framework and expanding the current literature on how AI capabilities manifest in an incumbent. Practical insights propose a hybrid learning approach, emphasizing AI training, collaboration with experts, and establishing internal networks and innovation labs. Effective AI integration relies on clear leadership guidance.

Faktorerna bakom streamers framgång: En studie om värdeskapande på digitala plattformar för interaktiv livestreaming.2022Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 poäng / 15 hpOppgave
    Abstract [en]

The development of digital economies, digital environments and digital collaborative cultures has enabled entrepreneur-like content creation and distribution through digital platforms and new media. In recent years the profession of livestreamers has become increasingly more popular. This study attempts to find out the factors behind livestreamers value-creating processes as well as how these processes help them stay relevant in the future. To do this, we have conducted a couple of interviews with up-and-coming streamers. In addition to this we have also orchestrated several observations on some of the most successful streamers. In these observations we applied the use of the framework Business Model Canvas. The results from our completed data collection presents several different factors behind value creation in streaming.  The conclusion we made which was based on the analysis of our result are divided into four significant factors. These are interaction, motivation, marketing and external communication, as well as personality and competence. We hope that our findings can help define and explain the value-creating processes in streaming.

    Abstract [en]

This paper puts forward the early, practical actions “in context” that can begin to sensitize, orient, expand, and constrain design dialogue at the outset of a design effort. Drawing on a case of “breaching experiments” in “non-places” we explore a “first approximation” of interventionist participation into the context of future interactive & responsive design interventions. By introducing a design journey, we have shed a light on how a human-centric approach, applied to the context of Human Building Interaction (HBI), can support an interventionist design dialogue between people and designed environment through processes of stirring up what’s beyond ‘norms’ of interaction.

Agil testning i datalagringsprojekt2016Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 poäng / 15 hpOppgave
    Abstract [en]

Testing in data warehousing has traditionally been done in large chunks at the end of development projects. This has often led to costly bug fixes because fixing bugs that are found late in the development process is generally a very time consuming task. In some cases, there is not enough time to fix these bugs because of narrow project deadlines. This can have major consequences for organizations because business decisions often relies on their data warehouse to provide accurate statistics and data. This study examines a department of a major Swedish agency that recently adopted agile methods to overcome some of the shortcomings associated with traditional data warehouse development. The effects of agile methods on data warehouse testing are examined, as well as the challenges that are needed to overcome for them to be successful. We also touch upon consequences of poor test design and what implications incorrect data that are delivered from a data warehouse can have both internally and externally. In conclusion, the study have found that adopting agile methods have led to test activities being carried out more often, more efficiently and with better results than in the past. In addition, product owners have been continuously involved in the development process through frequent acceptance tests. For agile methods to be successful in data warehouse testing, we also concluded that they need the support of tools, system environments and attitudes both among developers and product owners.

    Abstract [en]

The use of data analysis and Big Data has become increasingly important and is even a necessity for the competitiveness of modern organizations. The explanation for this trend is that the digitalization of society puts an enormous pressure on organizations to also evolve digitally. Previous research has tackled the problem surrounding an abundance of data without the knowledge of what to do with it, a situation which many organizations find themselves in. We have conducted a case study on a Swedish manufacturer and supplier in the food & beverage industry, that aims to develop their data analysis to produce better offers and campaigns for their customers. The purpose of this paper is to examine what challenges an organization faces in the early stages of implementing data analysis in their work processes. To give us background and context, we have applied some of the perspectives of Bernard Marr’s SMART Strategy along with two other models to better understand the situation the organization is in. There is no cure-all or universal strategy or guideline to be followed for organizations wanting to implement data analysis. Our findings indicate that there are different methods and strategies for this out there, and by taking heed to macro-organizational aspects such as culture, leadership and attitudes towards data-driven work, as well as clarifying the exact purpose of collecting specific data metrics, the chances of success increases.

ORGANIZATIONAL IDENTITY AND IMAGE THROUGH SOCIAL MEDIA: A study of how young adults perceive the Swedish Armed Forces2021Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year)), 10 poäng / 15 hpOppgave
    Abstract [en]

This study aims to investigate how social media are used to communicate organizational identity and image. The studied research question is how do young adults perceive the identity and image of the Swedish Armed Forces (SAF) through the organization's use of social media. The research on organizational identity within government agencies and people’s perception on organizations is limited. Therefore, we aim to expand the research on this subject using organizational identity as a theoretical concept. As organizations exists in the social context of today’s digital society, it is valuable to investigate how an organization’s identity and image is perceived externally. We conducted semi-structured reflective interviews with young adults and with an organization representative. Our findings show that young adults view the SAF’s social media use to improve their image and for recruitment purposes. In conclusion, our findings show that this social media use and perceptions of it, are reflective with the theories of organizational identity and image and highlights the importance of the external organizational image.

Kunskapsdelning i praktiken: En fallstudie om vilken roll IT spelar för delning av kunskap i ett distribuerat systemutvecklingsteam2015Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 poäng / 15 hpOppgave
    Abstract [en]

In a world of tough global competition, where the use of distributed working methods must be described as common, it’s crucial for organizations to have successful knowledge sharing between employees. The natural face-to-face communication is being replaced by various forms of IT-solutions, but it’s unclear what actual consequences that brings to knowledge sharing within organizations. Therefore, this paper research question is: What role does IT play for knowledge sharing in a distributed system development team? The theoretical data is collected from a literature study within the IS research. The empirical data is collected from observations and interviews at an IT consultancy. The results of the interviews and observations show how knowledge sharing occurs in the investigated practice and how it relates to IT. Our conclusion shows how IT does not replace communication face-to-face outright, but rather how IT generates new kinds of learning processes which changes the conditions for knowledge sharing. Furthermore, in the specific practice, the organization should develop conscious strategies around knowledge sharing which takes into account the interaction between IT, human actions and structural conditions.

This study is based on the question: how are the influencers using the social media platform Instagram in order to influence their followers? With the help of the Source Credibility Model, we have been able to value influencers credibility and usage during the netnographic method approach. The original Source Credibility Model consists of three factors: expertise, trustworthiness and attractiveness which helps to evaluate a source credibility. By doing this, we have been able to adapt and adjust this model to a new research area. Our analysis therefore reveals a fourth factor of this model - networking. This factor consists of two under categories: technical and social interaction. The study discovered that an influencer reaches attractivity with adjusting his or her visual content and by using functions on the social platform. The influencers collaborations and advertisement on the social platform shows on which level of expertise they achieve. Furthermore, the followers experience of the influencers content is evaluating the influencers credibility. To be able to evaluate these three factors, the influencer needs to interact with technical aspects such as social platforms and functions, but also to interact socially by giving personality and create engagement for the followers. The study also discovered a difference between male and female influencer usage of the platform, which gives their influence different impacts. This study therefore contributes the field of interest with a new model that can be used in order to examine influencer usage on different social platforms.

Hur påverkas svensk systemförvaltning av GDPR?: En explorativ studie av tysk informationssäkerhetspraktik2018Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 poäng / 15 hpOppgave
    Abstract [en]

Today, personal data is used to generate added value for organizations. Consequently, misuse of private data is not surprising. The upcoming implementation of General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) is an attempt to restrict the exploitation of private data. In contrast to the current privacy law, GDPR will be more adjusted to the conditions of the contemporary society. System maintenance is at the core of privacy issues since information is stored in the systems. Based on Germany’s already established strict privacy regulation mirrored in GDPR, Germany is used as a source of comparison for the purpose of this study. Through a qualitative approach of system maintenance and GDPR, we analyze different strategies to comprehend the complexity in information security regarding privacy data. Based on our study we present four distinct contributions; first, concrete suggestions to consider in order to successfully handle personal information; second, a recognition of an organizational perspective on information security; third, we provide empirical evidence of how the field of system maintenance has evolved over time; fourth, a methodological contribution on how to study upcoming effects.

Är digitala rum för alla?: En diskursanalys av sociala medier med fokus på bloggar2015Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 poäng / 15 hpOppgave
    Abstract [en]

Web 2.0 opened up for a lot of opportunities, digital spaces became open for everyone to participate. But if groups of people get harassed and threatened in this spaces, how does that affect participation? Threats, hateful comments and harassment is a phenomenon that appears to be a common part of life online. Some groups of people may experience this more then others. To investigate this further a qualitative study was conducted using two different methods of internet research; observation and interview online. I wanted to study how cyber hate take the expression against female bloggers that write about feminism. The women that participated in this study have all been harassed and received threats online of various kinds. The blogs that were observed all write about subjects that question and criticize social structures and norms that many take for granted. This seems to spark hatred and threats against these female bloggers. The interviewed bloggers had different strategies for dealing with cyber hate they received. One example of this is that they all review the comments before posted on the blog. A problem that a majority of the bloggers expressed was that general public and the justice system did not take cyber hate seriously. Some people that threats and post hateful comments do that with their full name exposed.  The study indicates that anonymity didn’t play that big part, as first expected, in how people expresses themselves online.

Understanding the design: A qualitative study of architecture and urban planning visualisation techniques in a public consultation setting2016Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year)), 10 poäng / 15 hpOppgave
    Abstract [en]

Visualisation of proposed plans and designs can be done with a number of differenttechniques within the field of architecture and urban planning. But which visualisationtechnique is best suited when presenting a design proposal at a public consultation? Is therea breaking point where the user can form a general understanding of the proposed designdepending on the degree of fidelity? To seek answers to these questions a qualitative studywas conducted where five different visualisation techniques were tested on ten users toassess their understanding of a proposed design. Our findings show that there is not asingle best visualisation technique for public consultation. Based on our results thepreferred alternative would be a combination of several techniques. We could also see thatthe general understanding of a space increased until a certain degree, and after that adeeper more detail oriented understanding was achieved.

Företag på Facebook: Hur de sprider information och interagerar med sina medlemmar2012Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 poäng / 15 hpOppgave
    Abstract [en]

Social media on the Web has become more common over the last decade and in recent years it has grown immensely. The social media with the highest amount of members is Facebook, where not only private persons are found - companies started to establish their profiles on the network in 2006. However, little is known about how these companies succeed and reach their audience with information dissemination and interact with them. The aim of this study is to contribute with information to local companies on how they can manage to maintain their activity with different approaches and strategies. This study examines how three different local companies chooses to spread information and maintain relationships with their members on Facebook. The research question in this thesis is: How are companies active on Facebook, in regard of dissemination of information and interaction? This is examined with the help of a framework which suggests three strategies with different grades of activity, which is applicable on the companies Facebook sites. The three strategies proposed by Waters, Burnett, Lamm and Lucas (2009) include disclosure, information dissemination and involvement. Disclosure contains a description about the company and its services, logo and opening hours. Information dissemination comprises photographs, video and audio files as well as news and campaigns in posted announcements or links. Involvement includes interactivity with customers, and between customers where ways to contact the company, such as e-mail and message boards exists. An e-commerce store is also presented in this strategy. The outcome of this thesis is that companies will have the best approach and strategy if they mirror their Facebook strategy with their business strategy. It is also of great importance to have continuous activity, both information dissemination and interactivity on the companies Facebook sites.

Digital nudging: en strategi för minskat matsvinn och hållbara matval vid skolmåltider2021Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 poäng / 15 hpOppgave
    Abstract [en]

Digitalizations progression have created new possibilities to work with sustainability questions which is one of many challenges for today’s society. Food waste and food choices are a big part of sustainability and are affected by human behavior. One way to work with human behavior is through digital nudging. Örnsköldsviks municipality works with food waste and food choices in their schools, but they haven’t investigated how they could influence their pupils on a wider level. One common way to work in this municipality is through strategies. The purpose of this study is to create knowledge for how digital nudging can be used to increase pupils' awareness as a way for the municipality of Örnsköldsvik to work with food waste and food choices in this municipality’s schools. On a wider level, this study can also be interesting for other municipality as a way to work with sustainability issues at school meals. The study is based on previous research in several related fields, semi structured interviews and an analysis of Instagrams accounts that belong to four school kitchens of the municipality. This creates a base for a strategy for digital nudging in this area. To bring clarity about the municipality capacity to work with this strategy we conducted a validation which tested the strategies applicability. The strategy was improved after feedback from the validation interviews. The result of this study is therefore a strategy with two practical suggestions on how the municipality of Örnsköldsvik could work with digital nudgingto work with food waste and food choices in this municipality schools. This study contributes to the current research on digital nudging since it investigates a gap that we could identify in the current research in this field. Furthermore, this study makes a practical contribution to Örnsköldsviks municipality since it presents a strategy they potentially could work with.

Kvalitet i minsta detalj: En heuristisk analys av mikrointeraktionsdesign2021Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 poäng / 15 hpOppgave
    Abstract [en]

In today's use of digital services, we seamlessly perform lots of microinteractions. Mostly without noticing them. When analysing what's good or bad in interaction with digital services, it is common to focus only on the big functions and it is easy for the small, effective moments in a microinteraction to be overlooked. This study takes a closer look at the microinteractions found in digital applications. Specifically, user-triggered microinteractions. The purpose of the study is to gain a broader understanding of how these microinteractions are designed to affect the user experience and what emotions may arise during the encounter with a service by studying the hedonic and pragmatic qualities that can be found in service's microinteractions. In the study, we performed a systematic heuristic analysis of 60 microinteractions, selected from the Google Play Store's top list, where the microinteractions were assessed individually by the study's two authors using an analysis tool developed for the study. The results show that the most common hedonic qualities in design of microinteractions today meet the needs of autonomy, security and luxury. To fulfill these needs, the study shows a link between metaphorical design and a sense of security, minimalist design and luxury, as well as clear communication and autonomy. The three most common pragmatic qualities are consistency, recognition and metaphor, where the connections between design and quality are shown to be metaphorical design and consistency, as well as the location of the trigger and recognition.

    Abstract [en]

Organizations have for a long time been using IT to increase the effectiveness and productivity of their employees. Today, organizations are taking it one step further, and have begun using IT as a way of automating business processes where large amounts of information is being handled. With a rising ability to handle an increasing number of complex tasks, automation is likely to change the foundation of organizations, and modern-day work. However, assessing the impact that automation will have on an organization is difficult, and research in this field is scarce. The purpose of this study is to examine the organizational opportunities, and challenges, that emerges when information-based business processes are automated. We conducted a case study of the ongoing automation efforts at a large insurance company. The results show that the challenges an organization faces are mainly linked to organizational management, while the perceived opportunities are mainly connected to the daily operations. Based on this, we provide organizations with guidelines on how to handle the challenges and seize the opportunities.

    Abstract [en]

It has become more popular to work abroad and companies have become more global than they used to. A big reason for this is due to globalization and the progress done within the field of technology. Because of this aloofness that occurs, a gap between the expatriates’ personal life and his or her working life develops. The cases focused on in this paper includes people who are distanced from their private lives at least a few consecutive months but are all aiming to get back when they are done with their individual errands. Computer-Mediated Communication can help these people to keep in touch and can also help them to stay in both places without physically being there. By taking advantage of the technological development that exists today it can help relatives and other people to stay close during these periods of time. When the expatriates’ come back to their private lives it can be as they never went away if Computer-Mediated Communication have been used frequently. This paper addresses the issue of emotional and geographical aloofness with research within the area of organizational use of Social Media and other types of Computer-Mediated Communication.

    Abstract [en]

Because of the demographic change and staff shortage during night shifts, the elder care have to find new sources to lower the workload. Many have studied ways to digitize and automate some work routines to take off load from the personnel. One that is in use today is digital cameras that helps personnel to routine check elder patients during the night. The study is based in northern Sweden where different locations have been examined and on their experience of digital technology. The society’s attitude toward technology have changed over the past 10 years, where people have become accustomed to use tools in different ways. Elderly Care have begun approaching digitalization and as today, various technical tools are being used. Several pilot projects are being launched in which new technologies are being tested. The goal is to find tools that help elder care to respond to future workload and to offer a more adapted aid for the elder. This study have focused on today's elderly care and how their activity focuses on digitizing their routines and services. An example of the phenomenon is digital night supervision, which is a way to offer night supervision through a digital camera. The purpose of this study is to open a discussion regarding digital solutions in the field of elder care, where to study the tools that are available today that can support the personnel. The goal is to contribute with  increased understanding and examine attitudes towards digital tools as well as examine what is required to gain increased acceptance toward digitization.

Digital sharing platforms: A study on potential barriers for successful establishment2021Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year)), 10 poäng / 15 hpOppgave
    Abstract [en]

The rising trend of over consumption has led to threatening environmental consequences. A solution to this would be collaborative consumption, as it promotes environmentally friendly sharing behaviors. Collaborative consumption can be enabled with digital tools, such as digital sharing platforms. The purpose of this study is to generate knowledge about how digital sharing platforms can be successfully established in order to build a good foundation for collaborative consumption. This qualitative research, influenced by grounded theory as a method, aims to explore the question “what are the barriers for establishing a digital sharing platform?”. Based on related research and by investigating a digital sharing platform called Umigo, we conducted six semi-structured interviews based on three technological frames and identified multiple barriers. With this research we make two main contributions. Our first contribution is that digital sharing platforms are unique in comparison to other platform types and should therefore be studied further. We also found an overview of the barriers that could prevent the successful establishment of digital sharing platforms.

Hybrid work models: Digital tool usage in a hybrid higher education environment2022Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (Two Years)), 10 poäng / 15 hpOppgave
    Abstract [en]

The changing environment during the COVID-19 pandemic has led to an increased demand for hybrid work formats. However, the research field merely focuses on hybrid work formats that were planned for. Generating knowledge regarding hybrid learning and how it can help those who intend to integrate it into their organizational settings is the purpose of this study. With this qualitative study we aim to make contributions to this research gap by exploring the research question “How are digital tools used for hybrid learning in higher education environments and how does it change the conditions for learning?”. The method used is a case study, in which we interview five respondents with differentiating experience of conducting hybrid learning. We found that digital tools are used similarly in both hybrid and non-hybrid higher education environments and that there had hardly been any kind of investments made towards hybrid work methods. We also found that hybrid learning works well for the traditional one-way communication lecture form but not as well for interactive lecture forms. Because this lecture form is important for deeper learning, in the context of this study hybrid learning is not perceived as an adequate lecture form. In addition to contributions to this research field, we aim to contribute to the practical usage of digital tools within hybrid work models.

Challenges of introducing and implementing mobile payments: A Qualitative study of the Swedish mobile payment application WyWallet2016Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year)), 10 poäng / 15 hpOppgave
    Abstract [en]

Citizens of Sweden are now facing a large shift in their habits of managing money transferring using mobile phones. They are now forced to use an application called WyWallet when making purchases with cell-phones. WyWallet is an application based on a new EU-directive that has led to a law concerning the new payment service act that wants to prevent money laundering and terrorist financing. This has led to a lot of consequences for the citizens and also other agencies relying on donations via text messages. This research has its focus on investigating how a mobile payment method in a modern society has failed in meeting their customers’ demands and requirements by having a customer focus. The material was collected through a focus group and subsequent in-depth interviews in order to reach an understanding of customer’s feelings, attitudes and expectations towards mobile payment methods. The findings show that several factors such as expectations, environmental issues, technological aspects, compatibility issues and convenience issues are not targeted in order to meet the requirement of customers and the current infrastructure of the society.

    Abstract [en]

Social media is used widely around the world by millions of people every day. In this report an analysis has been made of how organisations that are directed towards marginalized adolescents and young adults, are using social media in their working processes. The data has been gathered through qualitative interviews and case studies of three organisations, which are in different stages in their use of social media. The results from the study indicates that every chosen organisation wants to use social media applications for the same purpose, which is to be available where their target audience is situated, but their progress is reduced by elements such as priority, lack of knowledge and time.

FROM ABRUPT CHANGE TO DAILY ROUTINES: The organizational effect of one year with COVID-192021Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year)), 10 poäng / 15 hpOppgave
    Abstract [en]

The way we work has changed rapidly since the COVID-19 pandemic turned the world upside down. Remote work and telecommuting have become the new norm, a trend many of us have not asked or wished for. In this sense, this research is a reassessment of how IT companies in Sweden approached and managed the sudden transition to working remotely. With the support of previous literature on the topics of crisis management, organizational routine dynamics, and telecommuting, a set of seven semi-structured interviews were conducted to better understand the long-term challenges companies face during a crisis-induced shift into remote work. Our research reveals that organizations manage to quickly adapt the core business routines and operations, while social interactions and communication issues seem to be the biggest bottleneck when moving entirely remote. This leads to a perceived loss in overall productivity and the suffering of the work-life balance among all our respondents and their teams.

    Abstract [en]

This paper aim to present a model for evaluating what we choose to call HTML-frameworks, a framework that contains a set of CSS layouts and occasionally JavaScript support, based on the characteristics of the software quality standard ISO/IEC 9126-1. The methods used to produce this model is based on a field study that involved making a web portal with the help of a HTML-framework, some relevant literature and an analysis of the framework based on the characteristics of the ISO/IEC 9126-1 standard. The result was a model based on twelve different characteristics; functionality, web browser compatibility, collaborative skills, user-friendliness, documentation, visuals, graphic layout, performance, activity, professional support, replaceability and license. This model should be viewed upon as a suggestion to what a model for choosing HTML-framework could look like, because we haven’t had the time to test it in a real situation, so further studies are needed, and we believe there could be improvements made in the objectivity of the assessments of the characteristics.

Den samskapande algoritmen: En kvalitativ studie om generativa verktygs betydelse för grafisk formgivning2024Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 poäng / 15 hpOppgave
    Abstract [en]

This study examines the various application areas of generative AI in graphic design to understand its potential and limitations. Through qualitative interviews with professionals in graphic design, we garnered valuable perspectives that provided an understanding of generative AI's role in the design process. Utilizing the double diamond model for analysis highlighted the importance of generative AI in the solution phase of the design process. Generative AI proved valuable for workflows, idea generation, creative collaboration, visualization, and exploration of new design paths. Despite these advantages, limitations with generative AI were identified, especially in the problem area of the design process where human interaction and understanding are crucial. The research shows that human creativity and adaptability remain irreplaceable, as generative AI occasionally falls short in meeting designers' expectations or dealing with complex external factors like customer interactions and overall design goals. The conclusion emphasizes the importance of integrating generative AI as a supporting tool rather than replacing human creativity in graphic design.

    Abstract [en]

Previous literature have shown that social media has a large impact on people in

today’s society, especially on younger women who wish to create a certain identity.

However, studies on how quantitative feedback affects the establishment of ones

online identity are limited, which gives incentive to investigate this area further. This

thesis provides a deeper understanding of how younger women perceive onlineidentities,

‘likes’, and comments on the social media platform Instagram. Semistructured

interviews were conducted in order to give new perspectives on the subject.

The main conclusions are that younger women have an extensive need to seek

approval and that they customize their online-identity by exploiting trends in order to

maximize the number of ’likes’ and comments.

Digitala val i Sverige: Är digitalisering alltid den bästa lösningen?2023Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 poäng / 15 hpOppgave
    Abstract [en]

This paper investigates the digitization of the Swedish voting system, focusing on the adoption of i-voting that was deliberated in 2013 but ultimately rejected. The study aims to shed light on the extent to which the Swedish voting system can be digitized, while examining important factors, perspectives, and security concerns associated with e-elections. By analyzing the current state of the Swedish voting system and exploring the potential for digitization, this research provides insights into the feasibility, possibility, and risks of implementing a digital voting system in Sweden. The research begins by assessing the existing infrastructure, processes, and technologies in the Swedish voting system. Strengths and weaknesses are identified, forming the basis for evaluating the potential benefits of digitization. Key factors, such as accessibility, convenience, and efficiency, are examined to understand the potential impact of a digital voting system on voter turnout and participation. The role of worldbuilding: How does a rich and immersive game world contribute to player engagement and storytelling?2024Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 poäng / 15 hpOppgave
    Abstract [sv]

Chasing the dream of digital transformation: A case study of digital transformation in a peripheral production unit2024Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (Two Years)), 20 poäng / 30 hpOppgave
    Abstract [en]

Digital transformation within incumbent organisations is an ongoing issue as they grapple with knowing how to proceed. This research aims to guide incumbents on how to organise for digital transformation (DT) by asking the question, how does internal complexities within a peripheral production unit affect its digital transformation? To answer this question, a case study was conducted utilising the Gioia methodology, interviews, and observations. The findings illustrated different levels of digitalisation within the Factory, and that a lack of vision inhibits DT. The study contributes to DT research by adding empirical research in the context of DT and traditional industries. Moreover, it highlights how internal conditions for DT vary, resulting in asymmetrical efforts to transform across the Factory.

Sociala verktyg på en digital marknadsplats: Ett ramverk för användning av sociala medier i marknadsförings- och PR-syfte2013Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 poäng / 15 hpOppgave
    Abstract [en]

    Abstract

Digital media in general and social media in particular are becoming more and more important to businesses across the globe. It is an effective way to reach out to consumers and establish a good relationship with existing customers. Most companies today use digital media in order to market themselves and to establish good public relations. A lot of those companies have also realized the enormous marketing capabilities that social media provides. However, in spite of the plethora of possibilities that comes with social media it can also, in some cases, hinder the companies ́ success. In this essay I attempt to come up with a framework of strategies for how social media can be used in an effective way for marketing and PR. In order to accomplish this, I perform a quantitative study of how a dinner-kit company called Middagsfrid and their customers use the interactional features of Facebook. Finally, I present a framework of strategies for how social media can be used for marketing and PR.

The study conducted in this essay shows that it is important for companies to be active when communicating through social media and to explicitly seek interaction from the customers in order to have some control over the message that is being sent out. Furthermore, it shows that if a company wants to be a part of the social media-scene it is of great importance to do so wholeheartedly and with a plan.

Adoption av en kommunikationslösning: En kvalitativ studie2014Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 poäng / 15 hpOppgave
    Abstract [en]

The modern workplace is dependent on effective communication in order for the employees to be able to execute their tasks. Despite this over half of the new communications-solutions that are inserted to handle an organizations communication needs fail. Therefore this study focuses on the adoption of communication-solutions in the context of the modern workplace. This with the intent of identifying factors that are central to the individuals’ adoption of new communication-solutions. To this end a qualitative study was done through semi-structured interviews with ten respondents from four different organizations that recently inserted a new communication-solution. The findings of this study points to three factors as central for the adoption of a communication-solution. These are the existing information ecology, education and motivation. Organization should consider these three factors in order to contribute to the individual workers successful adoption of a new communication-solution. Although this study has a limited scope, tendencies the point towards the three factors that has been identified as central for the adoption of a communication-solution can be observed. More research within this field is needed to confirm the findings of this study.

Värdet av ett innovationscenteri offentlig sektor: En explorativ fallstudie av Arbetsförmedlingens digitalainnovationscenter2017Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 180 hpOppgave
    Abstract [en]

The conditions for organizations today has fundamentally changed as a result of

digitalization and digital innovation processes has become a central part in an organization's

continued work to handle changing requirements and needs. Arbetsförmedlingens

Innovationscenter is a new department that has been established as a part of the authority’s

journey towards digital renewal with the ambition to visualize digital opportunity for

tomorrow's labour market. A knowledge gap has been identified concerning how a public

organization through an innovation initiative manage the continuously increasing

expectations for them to work innovative and digitally. To close this gap an explorative case

study is conducted to study the role Innovationscenter plays in Arbetsförmedlingens work

with digital innovation. A conceptual framework is then created based on research on value

creation and innovation processes which is then used to study the empiricism. The study

shows that Innovationscenters role is mainly one of external monitoring, organisational

development and marketing. The conclusion is that Innovationscenter spends more time

inspiring than innovating and argumentation is presented concerning the importance of

creating the relevant structures to go from inspiration to innovation.

Multi-dimensional focus of IT Strategic approach for Value Co-creation: A study of customer’s experience in online banking service system2013Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (Two Years)), 20 poäng / 30 hpOppgave
    Abstract [en]

Service-dominant logic is the co-creation of value-in-use with service systems resources and customers. This study aims to approach strategy for value co-creation process from customer’s perspectives on self-service technology. For that, a case study was conducted about the customer’s experiences on creating the values when using the online banking service. The thesis begins with the introduction about the potential of IT in service-dominant logic with service systems, related literature and theoretical framework of value co-creation as value-in-use/value co-destruction. Further, this study has analyzed the risk factors, challenges and complexities that occurred in service systems in the perspective of value-in-use/value co-destruction. Based on the findings, I have approached the multi-dimensional focus of IT strategic (flexibility, comfortability, effective information entity and customer-centric network) approach to increase customer participation in value co-creation process. This approach could be helpful to improve the quality of service systems in self-service technology and to understand customer’s reality during value creation process.

Digital transformation: the material roles of IT resources and their political uses2015Doktoravhandling, med artikler (Annet vitenskapelig)
    Abstract [en]

As IT became ubiquitous, we recognized that IT was everywhere but in our theories. Despite significant efforts, Information System (IS) research is still in desperate search for the IT artifact. Recent reviews show that IS research first and foremost considers IT resources as a socio-technical and managerial concern. Analyses of inertia are restricted to cognitive limitations or technical challenges of IT development and use as separate activities. Hence, IS research assumes that more development resources, extended training, and better management could turn most failures into success. In this thesis, I posit that IS strategy research often treats normal failure as unexpected to maintain the rational idea that managers are in control and that IT does not matter in and of itself. I argue that planned and convergent views of change work well under stable and unitary conditions but in this way fail to account for the complexity of current IS strategy practice. To substantiate this claim, I demonstrate how IS research routinely neglects the material IT use story in the context of digital transformation (DT) studies and social informatics. Political conflict is a constant theme in IS strategy implementation research, yet few studies provided explanation for the apprehension that managers and workers display during the introduction of new IT resources; even as most managers remain men I found also no study that theorized gender politics as related to IS strategy outcomes. I argue in particular that the IS fields routine adherence to borrowed assumptions about the pace, linearity, and sequence of radical change have limited IS scholars to marginally improve on received DT narratives in which IT plays little or no part as IT appears as an agent mostly before and after DT. Though much is said about how IT triggers and enables organizational change, the actual processes and mechanisms that underlies IS strategy change enactments are thus poorly understood. To examine how the material roles of IT resources and their political use can be captured and explained, I summarize and synthesize insights grounded in empirics from four appended research papers. In this way, I chart avenues for material theorizing of micro-affordances and institutions, and develop an IS strategy-as-practice lens that attends IT use as a material practice. After developing this lens, I discuss how material practice perspectives afford deep understanding of the materialities through which actors create, sustain, and transform organizational practice with digital material, and highlight some opportunities to observe the social consequences of IT use in the context of critical studies on men and masculinities and digital gender.

Strategy Blindness as Disciplined IT-use Practice: Looking Past the 'Unintended and Unexpected' through the Practice Lens2016Inngår i: 2016 49th Annual Hawaii International Conference on System Science (HICSS) / [ed] Bui, TX; Sprague, RH, IEEE Computer Society, 2016, s. 4644-4653Konferansepaper (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

Strategy blindness is commonly understood as an unexpected outcome of IS strategy implementation that results as users make sense of new IT resources in unintended ways. What could be learned by instead treating strategy blindness expected? To this end, this paper unpacks some common assumptions of strategic failure and presents an alternative assumption ground. To explain how masculinites form sources of strategy failure, I reanalyze IT use at a Swedish paper-mill as negotiated among rough and respectable men: blue-collar workers and white-collar managers are shown to maintain distinct hierarchies yet enact the same fixed IT use reality; in each case, intimate relations to the paper machine dictated their ways. Power plays of optimization and mastery illustrate each identity. I then critique current ideas in strategic management and received notions of how IT matters in strategy practice.
