    Abstract [en]

    The aim of this dissertation is to analyze the public music-making by locals in Holmsund 1850—1980, and to explain the great variety of musical forms in hope to thereby illuminate the importance of local music-making for the workers' musical taste, but also how workers' musical aesthetics were affected by a more general working-class culture. The variety of musical forms is explained according to John Blacking's distinction between change of musical system, and variation and innovation within a musical system.

    There are two major changes of the musical system. The first generations of workers in Holmsund were recruited from the surrounding countryside, and the main structure of their music-making seems to have remained unchanged. During the 1880s and 1890s there is an introduction of new elements which dominate the whole industrial epoch: brass instruments become the most highly valued instruments, and the thoroughly organized group playing. The new ideals of instrument sound are related to the new soundscape of the industrial society. Organized group playing is seen as homological with the social organization of industrial production, where the work of individuals in different departments is coordinated by a conductor/executive in power.

    During the decade of the 1960s the musical system is once more changed. Electronic technology changes the concepts of sounds and distribution forms, the influence of local music-making on public musical taste became marginal. Local music-making cannot therefore be said to reflect a workers' aesthetic, but should rather be interpreted as tendencies counteracting the professionalism and mediafication of modern society.

    These epochal models outline the basic structural frame of the musical system of each period and the role assigned to local music-making. At the same time there is a great variety of musical forms within each period. These variations are systematized as temporarily-used ways fo managing certain pairs of concepts, which are seen as oppositional or complementary. These pairs are: individual/collective, ideals of equality/professionalization, education/entertainment, continuity/innovation, culture/subculture, and male/female.

    Finally, the ways in which values and attitudes of the general working-class culture influence the local music scene are analyzed. Instead of the abstract ideals of composition, the usefulness of the music is stressed in popular aesthetics. The genius cult of art musics does not fit into popular music situations, where the will to work hard for the audience is valued instead. Ways of relating to the body form another distinction between bourgeois and worker culture. Popular music is much centred around dance music, which is also used in concert situations. What these values and attitudes have in common is that they are part of a popular aesthetic which the educated aesthetic uses as a negative reference point.

    The following presentation discusses representation and testimonio in Swedish information on Nicaraguan women workers that has been produced by so called ‘development workers’. In Spanish the word testimonio is literally translated as ‘testimony’, as in the act of testifying or bearing witness in a legal or religious sense. In articles such as “The slave market in Nicaragua is growing” and “Karla – an ordinary robot” the journalist and development worker, Victoria Myrén, translates and mediates stories by women workers in Nicaraguan free trade zones for Swedish speaking readers. The articles express a sense of urgency to communicate experiences of repression and a desire to represent the way marginalized positions are used to legitimate capitalist recolonizing. In an attempt to demonstrate the suffering of women within the free trade zones, the articles position the reader as a jury in a courtroom listening to close descriptions of violations. The story of Karla Manzanares (translated and mediated by Myrén) depicts colonial domination, economic exploitation, sexism and racism.

    In this paper I argue that by speaking out, re-establishing a ‘voice’, Karla is also re-inscribing a subordinate position in society. The contradictions inherent in the project of representing the subaltern and simultaneously deconstructing the discourses that constitute the subaltern are evident. As Gayatri Spivak has pointed out, the recovery of the ‘voice’ of the subaltern also entails its erasure, since the mode of representation given in testimonio is no longer located in the space of subalternity but is instead more like a ‘ventriloquist’s dummy’.

    Karla’s written destiny stand for something inhuman happening in a country far away. The image of the tragic woman worker capture our fears. Like a safe place to contain horrible things in the world, she becomes a projection of desire for the solution of insoluble conflicts. These stories about Karla and other women workers are emancipatory actions yet they also act as surfaces of projection for desire, disgust and anger. This paper therefore explores the fine balance between mediating testimonios and reconstructing an image of Nicaraguan woman as the Other, as a negative mirror to the idea of white, western (Swedish) women.

    Studying a central museum’s exhibition forms and exhibition language for a century permits envestigation into how a museum can act independently of the surrounding society, or whether society, currents offashion and scientific theory, influence the development of the museum, of exhibition activity and of policy. It is of interest whether the protagonists in the museum, i.e.the supervisors, curators and other museum officials, are inspired by the spirit of their times and if so, to see how this has taken place. It is of importance to try to analyse the process of cultural dynamics apparent behind the formation of different exhibition structures, which in turn are logically the result of the ideas and values of the exhibition protagonists.

    The task is thus to place the Swedish cultural historical exhibition in a wider ideological, social and ethnological context: the exhibition is seen to be a product of its time, and in the communications interplay which an exhibition represents, the cultural meeting between the public and the museum becomes a central part of the analysis. This is namely where the museum’s cognitive structures of different kinds are confronted with the individual/visitor/perceiver’s experience. Exhibitions are things of fashion,influenced by the opinions and values of the day. This is why the exhibitions of the Nordic Museum change both in substance and in form and become a sort of reflection of the time in which they were produced.

    There is a look back at the growth of museum institutions in Europe, focusing ultimately on the birth of the Swedish museum institution and the related Homestead movement. Exhibitions, especially the large ones of the 20th century, are analysed, including comprehensive picture analysis. Several prominent museum officials have been interviewed about exhibitions at the museum. Articals written by critics for the daily newspapers have been researched and analysed, from the first decade of the century. The source material for the thesis emanates from ethnelogical, historical, art historical and literary spurces from both Swedish and foreign archives.

    Problemlösare och avslöjare – om kulturanalytikerns dubbla uppdrag

    Utbildning i praktisk kulturanalys syftar bland annat till att studenterna ska kunna översätta vetenskapligt grundad kulturkunskap till praktiskt användbara insikter i en värld präglad av motsättningar, inte minst kring kön, klass, ålder och etnicitet. Men kulturanalysens värde är inte främst att ge enkla förklaringar till varför folk beter sig som de gör eller snabbt verkande recept mot sociala problem av olika slag, utan i att utveckla förmågan att förstå och reda ut komplicerade sammanhang i människors möten med varandra. I denna text diskuteras vilka svårigheter kulturanalytikerns dubbla uppdrag som problemlösare och avslöjare skapar, men också hur denna lojalitetsparadox kan användas för att förstå det kulturellas betydelse som en både konserverande och förnyande kraft.

    The object of this study, taken from an inter-disciplinary standpoint, is to examine how dietary habits of a population of industrial workers in an agrarian environment have changed during the last hundred years, from a qualitative rather than a quantitative point of view. Of particular interest is to ascertain the values which "the common man" has held regarding his dietary and food habits. To ascertain his endeavours in pursuit of the quality of life, his "dream of the good life".

    Material and method: The empirical material comprises documentary material from different archives, eg. local press, Provincial Governors. The interview material consists of more than 50 interviews lasting between 1-3 hours. The nutritional analysis interestingly revealed that there were no essential deficiencies in the content of nutrient in the diet of the Stocka families. At the end of the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th, the diet was still dominated by cereals and contained very little fat. Lack of energy is presumed to have been a problem only in families with many children.

    The culturalanalysis: The food culture of the Stocka people was dependent of the local food availability. The company shop, the fishing, and the agrarian environment created their "life-style room" and their tastes. The "poverty cycle" was a determining factor for choice of food items in the working-classfamilies. The Stocka families, as other workers’ families in Sweden, strove single mindedly toward theend of the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th to increase their standard of living and the quality of their lives by "dreaming about the good life", the "dream of superabundance and riches" being the most central idea. This included food items of better quality, but above all about the ability to choose fattier, less fibrous, and more sweet foodstuffs as well as more animal products. Theworking class in Sweden has reached its "dream of the good life". Today, groups of people with lower educational levels eat more fats and less fibre compared with university graduates. The process of civilization has brought with it material improvements in most areas, likewise within the area of food culture. The industrial workers do not however demand as much energy input as previously.

    Abstract [en]

    The aim of this study is to investigate life forms and the dynamics of cultural processes in the parish of Tärna, Västerbotten. The material is an investigation of the life stories of two families, which have been investigated from an overall scientific aspect. The aim has been to examine the exploitation of resources by individuals and cognitive structures within the framework of ecological adaption. These aspects have been illuminated by the use of comprehensive source materials. Estate inventories have revealed different object categories which were associated with the exploitation of natural resources. Church registers, judgement books, tape recordings from folklore archives and the author's own interview material described life stories in a Saami mountain family and a settler family. It turned out that people in the mountains had supported themselves on a combination of stock-raising, hunting and fishing. Comprehensive socialized knowledge of the environment and its resources was a decisive factor for ecological adaption and survival. 

    The settler family had a solid knowledge of various handicrafts. The Saami in Tärna have settled down at an early stage and abandoned their former nomadism. The Saamish family investigated had a strong sense of family identity and their living story-telling tradition strengthened their identity and became a uniting factor. At the end of the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th century innovations began to emerge in the mountain parish, which often came to revolutionize the whole life pattern. The process of cultural change in Tärna in the 20th century has been dramatic. It has included the development of technology, modernization and changing exploitation of resources. Through the investigation of the life stories of the two families a clear picture has emerged of the exploitation of resources and of values, i.e. the total life pattern.

    This paper argues that the methods and methodologies used to conduct user research often provide a singular view of the user. It aims to demonstrate that by combining the strengths of three different research methodologies into a structured, correlative research platform we can create a rich, more holistic understanding of our users. Using a three-tiered methodological approach to research the cancer patient experience, we investigated patient anxiety and the emotional impact that curative radiation therapy has on these individuals. Our methodology, comprised of methods taken from quantitative, qualitative, and design research approaches, was designed to construct a research platform that would allow us to gather quantifiable data about our patient population while also using more qualitative approaches to gain a deeper understanding of the individuals’ patient experience. We used patient questionnaires as our quantitative method, user observations and interviews as our qualitative methods, and design probe kits as our design method. Each method was chosen because of its ability to provide us with a different perspective on the patients’ clinical experience. By structuring these methods around the same shared research question, we were able to find correlative relationships between the data collected from each, despite their different methodological approaches. This paper demonstrates that our three-tiered methodology provides a deep understanding of the user experience, from a systems level view down to that of the patient. In conclusion, this paper argues that it is important for design researches to select methods that build upon each other and provide different perspectives of the user, in order to create a holistic understanding of the user experience.

    Ethnicized and racialized social exclusion constitutes, to a more or less poignant degree, a common problem for all member states of the European Union. Accordingly, considerable official and academic attention has, during the 1980s and 1990s, been devoted to matters of poverty and social exclusion in the European Union. Among the early local-level studies on social exclusion of new ethnic minorities are those conducted by John Rex and associates in British cities. The idea of ‘exclusion’ from social rights of citizenship, in the Marshallian sense, became a guiding thread for defining and analysing ‘poverty’ within the framework of the Poverty Programme of the European Commission. All the emergent forms of ethnicized new poverty and processes of racialized exclusion inhibit salient features of a profound structural nature, which by far exceed the domain of a residual ‘social problem’ and the capacities for reform of national welfare regimes in crisis.
