Conservative Religion and Mainstream Culture: Opposition, Negotiation, and Adaptation2021Collection (editor) (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

This book highlights tensions and negotiating processes between modern society and conservative religious groups. Conservative religion and society have co-existed for at least a century in an increasingly pluralist society. Still, the right to religious freedom and tolerance clashes with certain expressions of religious exclusivity. In this book, scholars from different disciplines look at the various ways in which representatives of conservative religious faith live, practice, and formulate their religion in relation to a contemporary mainstream culture.

The studies included represent various settings with regard to time, religion and geography, and are presented in three thematic groups: culture, schooling and public life, and media. Taken together, the studies contribute to a more nuanced and diverse picture of conservative religious believers and their engagement with mainstream society. The book will be of interest to students and researchers in the fields of sociology of religion, church history and contemporary religion.

Introduction2021In: Conservative Religion and Mainstream Culture: Opposition, Negotiation, and Adaptation / [ed] Stefan Gelfgren, Daniel Lindmark, Palgrave Macmillan, 2021, 1, p. 1-14Chapter in book (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

In this introductory chapter, various terms and concepts referring to conservative religious groups are discussed, including fundamentalism and strong religion. Arguments for the use of the term conservative religion are presented. Usually, groups of conservative religion are characterized by conservative theology and morality, while their views of social and political matters can vary. Processes of modernisation and secularisation are also discussed in this chapter and related to conservative religion in the past and present. Finally, the introductory chapter contains a presentation of the subsequent chapters. The presentation concludes in a discussion of the strategies used by the groups under study in the empirical chapters: opposition, negotiation and adaptation.

Methods in Swedish History Textbook Research2011In: Yearbook (of the International Society for History Didactics), ISSN 1608-8751, Vol. 32, p. 89-101Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

The present article analyzes methodological awareness and use of methods in Swedish history textbook research, represented by five doctoral dissertations defended during the period 1997-2010. In a dissertation where textbook analysis comprises only a minor part of the study, methodological discussion tends to be limited. However, when textbook analysis is the primary focus, the most innovative methods are found and thus paid considerable attention. A number of methodological problems are identified, including inconsistencies between stated methodological choices and actual application. In general, the most recent textbook analyses contain more methodological discussion than earlier counterparts, a development that can be linked to the establishment of history didactics as a distinct research field.

Historical justice and history education2021Collection (editor) (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

This book explores how the expectations of historical justice movements and processes are understood within educational contexts, particularly history education. In recent years, movements for historical justice have gained global momentum and prominence as the focus on righting wrongs from the past has become a feature of contemporary politics. This imperative has manifested in globally diverse contexts including societies emerging from recent, violent conflict, but also established democracies which are increasingly compelled to address the legacies of colonialism, slavery, genocides, and war crimes, as well as other forms of protracted discord. This book examines historical justice from an educational perspective, exploring the myriad ways that education is understood as a site of historical injustice, as well as a mechanism for redress. The editors and contributors analyse the role of history education in processes of historical justice broadly, exploring educational sites, policies, media, and materials. This edited collection is a unique and important touchstone volume for scholars, policy-makers, practitioners, and teachers that can guide future research, policy, and practice in the fields of historical justice, human rights and history education.

Introduction: connecting historical justice and history education2021In: Historical justice and history education / [ed] Matilda Keynes; Henrik Åström Elmersjö; Daniel Lindmark; Björn Norlin, Palgrave Macmillan, 2021, 1, p. 1-20Chapter in book (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

This chapter works as an introduction to the overall theme of the volume, details the origin of the book, and outlines thematic sections and individual chapters. It also supplies a research overview and a summary of the emergence and rise of historical justice movements and processes around the world, detailing the ways that history education, broadly conceived, has been positioned as a significant site of historical injustice, as well as a mechanism for historical redress. Further, the chapter discusses this evolving relationship between historical justice and history education, elaborates on central concepts that appear in the book, and outlines challenges and possibilities this relationship generates for both fields.

Carl Olof Rosenius betydelse: regionalt, nationellt och internationellt2018Collection (editor) (Other academic)
    Abstract [sv]
