    Abstract [en]

    In 2014 a geoarchaeological study was undertaken on two boreholes, reaching ~17.00m below current sea level, from the River Alna and Aker outlets into Oslo harbour at the head of Oslo Fjord, Norway. The study was prompted by development work which would make the area, situated just outside the waterfront of the medieval town of Oslo, inaccessible for many decades to come. The aim was therefore to establish and explore the archaeological potential of the buried sediment stratigraphy. Analysis of the core revealed, contrary to expectation and to sealevel curve data, that there was evidence for deep water anaerobic sediments, overlain by shallow water river delta sediments no later than the latest Nordic Iron Age (c. 1000 AD: pre-Picea). The latter were increasingly rich in anthropogenic inclusions moving up the sequence, with a topmost sample displaying a subaerial and Dark Earthlike character, with most radiocarbon dates showing an age of c. 1300–1400 AD. The best explanation for these sediment accumulations, types and dates, is an interpretation of Alna River delta front slumping. We suggest this process occurred as a series of contemporary medieval delta sediment accumulations that first slumped sideways gently down-slope, before sliding more steeply downwards, into deep water, with a set of similarly dated sedimentsbecoming a vertical sequence as a result. These medieval sediments in fact recorded probable pro-delta, delta front,channel, levee and marsh facies, which involved both shallow water and subaerial environments. Thus the investigation indicates that sedimentation in the innermost reaches of the Oslo Fjord in the High and Late Middle Ages was massive, with potential effect on harbour conditions. It also shows that the rapidly advancing river deltafront offered good conditions for the rapid embedding and subsequent preservation of organic materials in clayey sediments. This would be beneficial even for the preservation of large organic objects like ship hulls which,as a result of slumping events, may be found even at deeper levels than where they originally sunk. Lastly, the study shows how worthwhile and useful off-site coring can be for palaeoenvironmental and archaeological reconstruction where few on-site deposits are preserved, even in the difficult drilling conditions of Oslo Harbour.

    Abstract [en]

    Macrofossil and geoarchaeological data from a variety of contexts and periods at Vik can provide either in situ or proxyinformation on the human – environment interactions at the site through time. The aim of this paper is to discuss settlementactivity patterns through time and space, with special emphasis on agriculture and animal husbandry strategies. The calcareousshell bank deposits at the site led to a reduction of the amount of analysed citric soluble phosphate and are apparentlyalso linked to very poor macrofossil preservation. The analysis shows that farming in the pre-Roman Iron Age involvedanimal management and manuring of fields where naked and hulled barley were cultivated. Stock was kept in the long houses.There are also indications that animals grazed along the shore. In the Roman Iron Age there is no clear evidence of keepinglivestock indoors; byre residues were instead found in house-associated waste heaps, where chemical data indicate thatdung was left to ferment. Near-house Roman Iron Age waste deposits were also characterised by latrine and fish processingwaste, as well as by high temperature artisan residues – fuel ash and iron working materials. Analysis of soil chemical samplesindicates an increase and intensification of occupation over time during the pre-Roman Iron Age and the Roman Iron Age.Viking-medieval features were also a remarkable source for monitoring latrine, byre and industrial waste, including the secondaryuse of water holes and wells that supplied water to both people and animals.

    I samband med arkeologiska undersökningar i Fangberget har ett antal prover inskickats tillMAL från en sk för att belysa lokal markanvändning via pollenanalyser och påvisa möjligbegravning i en gravhögskontext. I en tidigare rapport finns resultat av mikromorfologi medkompletterande geokemiska analyser beskrivna från samma plats (Macphail 2017).

    Provmaterial från lokaliteten har analyserats med avseende följande parametrar: Geokemi,pollen samt mikromorfologi.

    I denna rapport avhandlas 45 markprover samt fem pollenprover insamlade från en kontextsom initialt bedömdes vara en gravhög men som visade sig vara en naturbildning med möjligasmidesaktiviteter på denna naturliga kullens yta av (Christian Rødsrud muntligen).

    Abstract [sv]

    Proverna kommer från ett boplatsområde på ett fält omgivet av modern bebyggelse med närhet till en mosse. Vid undersökningen framkom 11 stolphål, 2 möjliga stolphål, 4 kokgropar, 2 möjliga härdar, ett förmodat förhistoriskt odlingslager samt en eventuell grav innehållande keramik och enstaka benfragment. Stolphålen var placerade i mitten av fältet på en av de högsta och plattaste ytorna i området. Fyra av stolphålen är förmodligen en del av en struktur. Prover för mikromorfologi är beställda och analyseras separat av Richard Macphail. Frågeställningar kopplade till de botaniska analyserna berör framförallt odling och jordbruk i området och huruvida mossen är samtida med de undersökta boplatsspåren. För humusextraktionen rör det framförallt material för datering.

    Abstract [sv]

    På uppdrag av Kalmar läns museum har två bulkprover analyserats. Ett för pollen och 14 C samt ett kolprov för utplock av daterbart material. Provet som ursprungligen enbart skulle analyseras för pollen har även genomsökts för att finna daterbart makrofossil. Pollenprovet är taget under en sten, något nedtryckt i moränen och placerad längst ner i stenpackningen i en kvadratisk stensättning. Kolprovet togs i samma stensättning i en stor mörkfärgning under stenpackningen. I denna mörkfärgning framkom ett sköldhandtag från yngre romersk järnålder, ca 200-400 e.v.t. Den omgivande miljön runt graven utgörs av igenplanterad åkermark. Ett hundratal röjningsrösen av äldre karaktär finns även i närområdet.
