    Abstract [en]

It is no secret that the 'glass ceiling' preventing women advancing to leadership positions exists in academia as well. Spain is no exception. Gender relations are usually investigated independently of other power relations like class and ethnicity. In our sample (80 men and women in different academic institutions across Spain) we found that not only women but also men from working class backgrounds have difficulties making successful academic careers. Therefore, we use an intersectional approach to investigate the relationship between gender and class. Comparing two life-histories, we explore what strategies individuals employ to overcome the barriers with which they are confronted. We present the stories of a woman with a middle class but non-academic background and of a man with a working-class background. Their strategies can be understood as the result of specific individual trajectories under specific societal conditions, but they also illustrate the barriers and possibilities men and women with non-standard backgrounds encounter in academia. Analysing successful strategies as well as their limitations, we aim to provide perspectives that might contribute to changing the culture of hegemonic masculinities in academia.

Intruders and outsiders in academia: the intersections of gender and class2023Inngår i: International perspectives on higher education research / [ed] Alasdair Blair; Darrell Evans; Christina Hughes; Malcolm Tight, Emerald Group Publishing Limited, 2023, s. 77-94Kapittel i bok, del av antologi (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

In this chapter the authors analyse different forms of gender and class discrimination in Spanish academic institutions. Androcentrism in terms of the structures of academic institutions, the meritocratic system, the rhythms and contents of work present barriers for women advancing into positions of leadership. The intersectionality of gender and class provides different kinds of hurdles and possibilities for women and men from middle-class and working-class backgrounds. Relationships between (mostly male) supervisors and men and women researchers tend to strengthen men's capabilities of developing their own scientific aspirations and claims to leadership, while women tend to become subordinated supporters of their supervisors' objectives. Power structures dominated by men's values have the effect that some women do not perceive leadership positions as desirable.

Rassismus: die schwierigkeit, nicht rassistisch zu sein2017Collection/Antologi (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [de]

In »Rassismus.

Connecting individual trajectories and resistance movements in Brazil2021Inngår i: Palgrave handbook of environmental labour studies / [ed] Nora Räthzel; Dimitris Stevis; David Uzzell, Cham: Palgrave Macmillan, 2021, 1, s. 339-364Kapittel i bok, del av antologi (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

This chapter analyses social protests against environmental degradation in Brazil in a context of expanding capitalist relations of production and agribusiness. Data on agrarian protests reveal the main strategies carried out by peasants and small farmers in their struggles for land. The growth of agrarian and environmental conflicts reveals the destructive power of corporations, agribusiness and the state as they threaten nature, labour, local economies and popular cultures, and thus life in general. In a second part the chapter follows the individual trajectories of peasants and rural workers who became leaders of women's movements and trade unions resisting environmental destruction and creating commons communities. They recount how they have learned to become part of the resistance in local unions and political movements and parties. Present as a salient element in all life histories was Liberation Theology, which created a lasting legacy of values centred on justice, fairness and a concern for people and nature.

Disconnected spaces: introducing environmental perspectives into the trade union agendatop-down and bottom-up2015Inngår i: Environmental Sociology, Vol. 1, nr 3, s. 166-176Artikkel i tidsskrift (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

This article compares how visions for integrating environmental issues into the union agenda are articulated from two different positions in the Swedish Trade Union Confederation (LO). The article is based on an analysis of ‘life history interviews’ and directs attention to the biographical circumstances under which individuals are able to work with environmental issues in unions. The analysis shows that the conditions for integrating environmental issues are weakened by the hierarchical culture of the organisation and by high levels of institutionalisation. LO furthermore lacks routines for mobilising the interests of environmental enthusiasts, and being positioned at headquarters hampers the abilities of union officials to mobilise environmental interests among members. Comparing the experiences from Sweden with the case of Comisiones Obreras (CCOO) in Spain shows that success depends on a relationship between individual engagement and political. Union transformation is contingent on developing issues that connect the immediate interests of workers with their long-term interests as citizens, such that a new workers’ identity can develop and lead to practices that overcome the ‘metabolic rift’.

Politicizing biographies: the forming of transnational subjectivities as insiders outside2007Inngår i: Feminist review (Print), ISSN 0141-7789, E-ISSN 1466-4380, nr 86, s. 86-112Artikkel i tidsskrift (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

We take our own life stories as points of departure to look at some of the ways in which women were politicized in Argentina and West Germany (our respective countries of origin), focusing on similarities as well as differences in our politicization processes. We aim at putting present discussions about global political movements into a historical perspective. We want also to illuminate the centrality of political identities in the construction of specific (gendered) subjectivities. Our focus lies on theorizing the ways through which privileged (gendered) identities critically re-read their own position and transform their own understanding of themselves and the world through the field of the political. Methodologically, we want to contribute to ways of re-thinking Feminist methodologies by experimenting with a form of analysis in which we are alternately the subject and the object of our research process. The aim of this intervention is to transgress the binary oppositions between researcher/researched and challenge traditional understanding of social science where researchers provide analysis and informants have 'experience'. One of our conclusions is that the 68 movement provided subject positions for living alternative normalities as an 'insider-outside', that is, for those who belonged to normalized groups in their respective societies, but for different reasons (of which we analyse some concerning our formation as 'women') could not identify with the dominant normalities offered to them. At the same time, the dominant male instrumentality of the movement estranged (some) women and allowed them (or forced them into) a kind of distanced engagement that, perhaps paradoxically, provided a basis for sustaining their political subjectivities through transformative experiences of defeat.

Everyday working lives in a transnational corporation in Mexico: the contradictory cooptation of trade unionists2011Inngår i: Economic and Industrial Democracy, ISSN 0143-831X, E-ISSN 1461-7099, Vol. 32, nr 3, s. 379-399Artikkel i tidsskrift (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

This article aims to contribute to the rich literature on neoliberalization and trade unions in Mexico by providing an examination of the contradictory relationships between capital, trade unions and the workers they represent, in a Swedish-based transnational corporation. The article investigates how the broader international relationships of dependency and exploitation are lived by workers and trade unionists in the everyday of a transnational corporation in Mexico, where the power of the trade unions has been undermined by politics of neoliberalization and by the demise of the ruling party, with which the unions are allied. Its thesis is that trade unions are changing from being power brokers between governments, companies and workers to becoming mediators of subordination to the company. While they still retain some of their power (for instance their participation in hiring and firing), they are becoming unable to secure work security and workers’ rights. In the everyday working life of a factory this means that unionists are torn between their need and wish to protect workers´ rights and their jobs as union officials. In this context, they experience a need to subordinate themselves and the workers they are supposed to represent to the strategy of the management. They employ a number of strategies to legitimate their existence, none of which appears to be very convincing to the workers. While the union´s strategies undermine their ability and that of the workers to organize for their rights, it also produces a dissatisfaction among workers that counters the companys attempt to organize consent and motivation.

    Abstract [en]

Räthzel discusses the transformative work of union environmentalists in one of the largest Spanish trade union confederations. She explores how 'organic intellectuals' coming from the resistance movement against the Franco regime were capable to take advantage of a favourable conjuncture of societal and organisational conditions. Connecting Marxism with environmentalism, they created an extensive set of environmental policies and structures, including hundreds of environmental representatives throughout the country, a research institute and an international organisation reaching out to unions in the Global South. Based on documents and the life-histories of the protagonists, it is argued that the success, crisis and revival of this 'environmental project' can only be understood by analysing the relationship between structural affordances and the role of individuals as promoters of change.

Society - labour - nature: how to think the relationships2021Inngår i: The Palgrave handbook of environmental labour studies / [ed] Nora Räthzel; Dimitris Stevis; David Uzzell, Cham: Palgrave Macmillan, 2021, 1, s. 793-814Kapittel i bok, del av antologi (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

Räthzel discusses different ways of thinking the society–nature relationship: nature as social, as sympoiesis, humans and non-human nature 'working together', capital as a producer and product of nature, capital as a destroyer of nature. These conceptualisations do not account sufficiently for the centrality of work as the mediator between human and non-human nature. Merging Marx's concept of work with Moore's analysis of capitalism as exploiting waged and appropriating unpaid work and with Haug's notion of gender relations as relations of production it is argued, could provide a framework for understanding the production of the means of life and the production of life (care work paid and unpaid) as processes of communicating vessels. This could also help to link hitherto separate studies of labour environmentalism, environmental justice, and care work.

Society–labor–nature: the potential of conflict2023Inngår i: Critical sustainability sciences: intercultural and emancipatory perspectives / [ed] Stephan Rist; Patrick Bottazzi; Johanna Jacobi, Routledge, 2023, s. 146-171Kapittel i bok, del av antologi (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

In this chapter, I argue for the necessity to introduce the concept of work (labor) as a mediator between human and non-human lives. I discuss the main insights of influential conceptualizations of the society-nature relationship: a non-reductionist concept of nature as social; "sympoiesis" the co-construction of the world by human and non-human natures; a history understanding the conflictual interrelated effects of human and non-human natures within the capitalist mode of production; harmony between human and non-human natures as a perspective to overcome the capitalist exploitation of workers and the earth; labor that creates and cares for life as a model for labor in general. I argue with Marx that the specificity of human work is its ability to transform human and non-human natures on a global scale, which makes it potentially destructive. Capitalism realizes that potential. To hinder this, indigenous workers, industrial, service, and care workers need to connect and resist. We need an overarching theoretical framework that includes all relations of production as dependent on each other to understand how such connections might happen.
