Käännösstrategiat ja diskurssit: analyysi 1600–1800-lukujen ranskalaisista Lapin-kuvauksista ja niiden moderneista suomennoksista2020Doktorsavhandling, monografi (Övrigt vetenskapligt)
    Abstract [en]

In my dissertation, I study the ways discourses of Finnishness and Saminess are being construed in three French travel depictions dating from 17th to 19th century and their Finnish translations dating from the late 20th century. Firstly, I examine the discursive image of Lapland in the French source texts and the Finnish target texts. Secondly, I analyze the translations as cultural products and the ways the translation process affects the construction of discourses.

My research can be described as interdisciplinary and mixed methods research. I examine discourses in the contexts of critical text and discourse analysis as well as discourse-oriented translation analysis and sociology of translation. I use both qualitative and quantitative methods. In particular, I utilize the Hallidayan register analysis with a focus on the ideational function. In addition, I study the language and discourse changes brought on by the translation process through the analysis of translation shifts and strategies.

The discourses construed in the French travel descriptions of the Finns and the Sami are in many ways stereotypical and recurring. However, they also reflect the societal ideals, values and circumstances of their own era and evolve and transform with and through the changes in the society. As the exoticism and the discourse of wilderness of the earliest travel depiction evolve into a discourse of pity in the 18th century and romanticism in the 19th century, the discourses on Finnishness especially become more positive.

The global translation strategy of the translator has been that of cultural filtering, especially domestication. In addition, the level of explicitness, descriptivity and cohesion has increased in the target texts. The target texts also become polyphonic as the voice of the translator is introduced next to and above the voices of the French writers, in order to direct and guide the modern Finnish reader.

    Abstract [en]

The article discusses the different ideological aspects of the translation process and the role of thetranslator as the mediator of Otherness in relation to a case study which researches the image of FinnishLapland in French travel literature from the 17th to the 19th century. The article is based on an analysis ofan interview with a Finnish translator, Marja Itkonen-Kaila, who has done several translations of Frenchtravel depictions of Lapland. These Finnish texts can be characterized as partially domesticated, faithfultranslations whereas the translator’s strategy is that of minimum change: the translations are readerfriendly, but loyal to the source texts. The interview clarified the functions and intentions behind thetranslations and showed that many other factors besides the translator contribute to the translationprocess. However, the translator’s role as a writer and as the mediator of Otherness should not beminimized. The translations form an important part of the discursive representations of the Other.

    Abstract [en]

The article examines the discursive construction of Otherness in text and, in particular, translated text, through an analysis of a French travel account, Voyage d’une femme au Spitzberg, published in 1854 by Léonie d’Aunet, and its modern Finnish translation from 1977. The analysis focuses on the letters describing d’Aunet’s travel through autumnal Lapland in 1839. The study combines critical discourse analysis with paratextual analysis of the translation to outline discourses on Lapland and Northern people constructed in d’Aunet’s account and to describe how her text forms a part of an intertextual continuum of French representations of Lapland. The analysis shows that while d’Aunet’s work reproduces many stereotypical and even racist discourses typical for the era, it also brings forth a feminine point of view rarely seen in travel accounts of the North. The analysis also demonstrates how the use of translator’s paratexts not only recontextualizes the translation, but also makes it polyphonic, by adding to the text the voice of a cultural and historical expert who guides and directs the modern reader in their interpretation of the travelogue.
