Biological diversity: An artistic and an educational project2021In: Everyday Extremes: Relate North 2021 / [ed] Svetlana Usenyuk-Kravchuk; Sofia Prokopova, 2021Conference paper (Other (popular science, discussion, etc.))
    Abstract [en]

As well as exploring artistic expression through technique and material, the project is also serving educational values in terms of developing both specific and generic competencies. A project designed for teacher and student to explo- re and grow together.

This project involves my 5-year old child, discovering life in nature through all her senses. Fascinated by colours, textures and deeply curious about their being in this world, she catches insects with a gentle hand inside and outside of our house. Together we study, research and learn more about them, these seemingly insignificant species that we encounter. Our nordic insects are usually small and not as vibrant in colour and size as exotic ones, but do play an important role in our ecosystem. By enlarging and placing an artistic interpretation of them to their place of origin, we can not only learn about them, but also draw attention to them, and to the biological diversity we stand to preserve. Everyday life, extreme in size. The project took place during the summer of 2021 and involves about 20 insects.

Using photographs as an artistic method to inspire: exploring the landscape of Traena through art-based processes2022In: Dwellers in the landscape: summer school and exhibition / [ed] Elina Härkönen; Mari Parpala; Mette Gårdvik, University of Lapland , 2022, p. 96-103Chapter in book (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

As an artist, I use art making as a way to connect with nature. As an educator, I teach others how to engage in various art-making practices to experience a connection to the natural world. My desire is to teach students how to create interesting concepts and find inspiration themselves. Learning how to utilise - and even more important - find inspiration is a key component to constantly explore different content and develop a unique style or process. In this paper I intend to present a method using photographs to find inspiration as a source for design, craft and artistic work. Also, I intend to explore how that method relates to process art and creativity.

UMU Sloydlab: En ny digital undervisningsmiljö2022Conference paper (Other academic)
    Abstract [sv]

    Bakgrund:

    • Finansierat fortbildningsprojekt (presenterat på ”Make & Learn” ÅJ & MW + medarbetare)

    Erfarenheter & reflektioner:

The evolution of the creative process: molded & embossed leather stinkbug bags2023Artistic output (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

The creative journey is neither linear nor uniform; it’s a mix of experiences, methods, techniques, and choices that blend together seamlessly. This series is a reflection of this evolutionary process. It is not about the destination—the finished piece—but about the narrative that unfolds along the way. It’s about the choices made, the influences assimilated, and the unforeseen paths that emerge. The different designs of beetles unfolds the story of a creative process evolving. My work embraces the fluidity between design, art and craft, navigating a realm where traditional boundaries are redefined.

The series, featuring various species of stink or shield bugs, is carefully crafted from vegetable-tanned leather, with an aim of capturing the beauty of insects amidst our changing world. It also reflects a deeper issue, mirroring the quiet vanishing of insect populations globally.

In this series I explore the boundaries between art, design, and craft, as well as blending digital and traditional tools in the making of small crossbody bags, a practical item with a touch of humor.

Three generations: Connecting then and now through time and media.2021Artistic output (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

In this series I am exploring the intersection and possibilities between analogue and digital media. These three images depict me, my mum and my grandma. Analogous led pencil portrait from drawings of us at the same age, digitalised and combined with digital watercolour. When finished, I printed them on fine art etching paper before adding the final touches by hand.

The theme I am exploring in these art works is generations of women, captured in the same age. Artworks originating from photos taken exactly 28 years apart, showing a glimpse of time through hairstyle and pose. Each person is then portrayed in colours and associations such as animals and plants which I relate to their identity.

Using photographs as an artistic method to inspire: Exploring the landscape of Traena through art-based processes2022Artistic output (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

This project pivots around the use of nature as a source of inspiration. I wanted to explore how many possible variations of artistic expression I could achieve by using abstract photographs of details in nature as a method to provide inspiration to the art-based process. By developing as many ideas as possible in different materials and techniques, I wanted to explore if and how such a method could be of use.

Printed and mounted research material, Sara Rylander 2022; Digital painting, analogue painting, analogue drawing, monotype, papercut, drawing color schemes, drawing facts, carving wooden textures, tufting, felting
